Di Marzio: Leao in visible pain after Bologna-Milan – the latest on his condition

By Oliver Fisher -

There was a scary moment at the end of the game against Bologna tonight as Rafael Leao fell to the floor in pain after the full-time whistle.

Goals from Giroud and Christian Pulisic gave Milan three vital points to start the season in the right way at the Stadio Renato Dall’Ara against a Bologna side that have become a very tricky proposition under Thiago Motta.

As soon as the referee Luca Pairetto blew for full-time, Leao kicked the ball high in the air. Soon after, the Portuguese winger began to limp and slumped to the ground, clearly in some pain.

After a few minutes the cameras picked up on it and showed him during what was a presumable attack of cramps. His team-mates noticed this, and stretched out his leg as is the practice in these cases.

It is nothing serious for the Milan No.10, who definitely gave the Rossoneri fans a scare.

  1. Would be a disaster if it’s anything more than cramp, at least no midweek game this week.

That said, at least we have some depth out there now, it wouldn’t be as big a disaster as last season, hopefully.

  2. Yeah, I’m pretty sure that was cramps. Considering the temperature, it isn’t a surprise. But I think he should have been subbed off. He was obviously pretty fatigued.

I’m good with Pioli, but his substitutions need work.

  3. He’ll be fine. Just cramps. But even if he needed to miss one game, Pulisic can start at LW and Chukwueze can start at RW. We have firepower and depth this year unlike last year when our two choices at RW were Saelemakers and Messias who are both trash compared to our choices this year.

  4. I’d say probably ten minutes sooner because of weather conditions. Hopefully temperatures start to cool off sooner rather than later…

  5. We can safely let him rest in not so intense match, because we already have many good wingers.
Like : Chukwueze as RW & Pulisic as LW. Or Okafor LW.

We may after the treble with this squad, this season.

  6. I am a football analyst leao can’t cope with the 4-3-3 formation if I’m Pioli I will return to a 4-2-3-1 to suit leao as our star player even pulisic is not Good in the right wing but solid in the attacking midfield even is goal is from attacking midfield is simple return cheek to sub used rejnider and krunic in double pivot pushed pulisic or musah at the no 10 attacking midfield trust me Acmilan will score more than two goals against Bologna because some players has chances to score but because they weren’t used to the formation it was difficult for acmilan to adapt even Acmilan pressing well in the midfield was the adaptability of the 4-2-3-1 so I advised Pioli not to work by sight so he should the 4-2-3-1 and see the results even chukwueze will be more dangerous to be fielded in the that line up inter Milan defeated us not because of the formation but because we need more dangerous players and we have gotten them so Pioli do the needful thank you

    1. I agree that the double pivot will suit this new line up much better than 433. It will also provide cover for our defense, which looks to be our achilles right now.

  7. I think for Leao, whether it’s a 4-2-3-1 or a 4-3-3, he is fine because he can stay out wider.
The issue last year when we went to 3 in the back is that we played a 3-4-2-1 and so he had to pinch into the middle more and he had less open space to do his magic/footwork and running in behind.
