Di Marzio: Milan behind Newcastle, Inter and Chelsea in race to land Belgium star

By Oliver Fisher -

Journalist Gianluca Di Marzio believes AC Milan face an uphill battle if they are to land Napoli striker Dries Mertens.

Earlier on Monday a report emerged from Spain claiming Milan are in advanced talks with the entourage of Mertens and an announcement could arrive next week.

Then it was confirmed on Tuesday by La Stampa that the Rossoneri are in talks with the Belgium international, who turns 33 today.

According to what Di Marzio has said (via MilanLive on YouTube), the interest of the Rossoneri in the Belgian has not been confirmed, but there is no agreement with Napoli over a renewal.

Chelsea, Newcastle and Inter are all seriously interested and have made enquiries with his entourage, while Borussia Dortmund and Paris Saint-Germain remain in the background.

Mertens wants to be a protagonist and to play the Champions League, which he cannot do with Milan. The 32-year-old has 121 goals and 73 assists for Napoli in 311 games across all competitions (via Transfermarkt).
