Di Marzio: Milan in talks with Chelsea over loan with option deal for midfielder

By Isak Möller -

Carney Chukwuemeka has ended up on the radar of AC Milan and talks are currently ongoing with Chelsea, a report claims. The Rossoneri are eyeing a loan move and given the good relations, they could succeed.

Milan have been on good terms with Chelsea for several years now, signing the likes of Fikayo Tomori, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Christian Pulisic and Olivier Giroud. Therefore, it’s not exactly surprising that the Rossoneri are interested in yet another Stamford Bridge player.

According to Gianluca Di Marzio, Chukwuemeka could be the next player to make the move as the clubs are discussing a loan deal. There would be an option to buy in favour of Milan, although it remains to be seen if Chelsea will accept this.

It’s not the first time that the midfielder has been linked with the Rossoneri, having been on their radar for several years now. At the age of 20, he certainly has huge potential and especially on a loan, it would be a very good signing.

The only question mark could be where Chukwuemeka will play, as Milan already have Loftus-Cheek for the attacking midfield role. If anything, they need a defensive midfielder to provide the balance that was lacking last season.

  1. Looked very promising at Villa but then be chose Chelsea and got lost in that mess.
Loan with option would be a good deal. He can back up RLC.

    1. Lets hope next season we are not playing RLC as an AM again!

The squad is built for 433 (without a DM).

Hopefully Fonseca plays players in their natural positions and we have a bunch of box to box midfielders

  2. Only with option to buy otherwise not worth it. Well emergencies aside Milan must never take any players on loan without some options of redemption.

  3. I wonder when we’ll drop that policy of recruiting young unproven players. Most of them need at least one season to adapt, sometimes even more.

Between 2020 and 2023, here are the under 22 players that achieved expectations for their first season: Kalulu (2020 – 20 yo), Thiaw (2022 – 21 yo).

    And the players under 22 that didn’t achieve expectations for their first season: Tonali (2020 – 20 yo), Hauge (2020 – 20 yo), Dalot (2020 – 21 yo), Diaz (2020 – 21 yo), Lazetic (2021 – 18 yo), De Ketelaere (2022 – 21 yo), Vranckx (2022 – 19 yo), Dest (2022 – 21 yo), Adli (2022 – 21 yo), Musah (2023 – 20 yo), Terracciano (2023 – 20 yo), Pellegrino (2023 – 21 yo), Romero (2023 – 18 yo).

That’s a probability of 13,33% of success for under 22 players.

      1. I think the club is financially mature enough to compete now and spend money on proven players, like Rabiot or Fofana.

        In comparison, here are the players over 25 that achieved expectations for their first season during the same extent of time (2020-2023): Rebic (2020 – 26 yo), Kjaer (2020 – 31 yo), Maignan (2021 – 25 yo), Giroud (2021 – 34 yo), Florenzi (2021 – 30 yo), Loftus-Cheek (2023 – 27 yo), Jovic (2023 – 25 yo).

        And the players over 25 who didn’t achieve expectations: Mandzukic (2020 – 34 yo), Bakayoko (2021 – 27 yo), Messias (2021 – 30 yo), Origi (2022 – 27 yo).

Then the probability of success for players over 25 is 63,64%. Compared to 13,33% for under 22.

        1. I’d argue that Messias did achieve expectations. I think he was always only seen as a cheap stop gap / squad player.
He covered a role for two years and then we moved him on for no loss of value.

    1. 1.Romero was never meant to be Milan player. He is free and they hoped to get some resale on him. Purely business.
      2 Lazetic wasn’t meant for 1st team.
      3. Terraciano is an emergency back up.
      4. Pellegrino has the same purpose with Romero.
      5. Diaz was one stop gap to fill the position before what supposed to be the real deal in CDK bought

      1. Only statistics here. Carney Chukwuemeka falls in the category of under 22 players. Maybe he would be recruited to play for U23, maybe for first team, maybe to be a starter, maybe for the bench, all of that is irrelevant. We should focus on improving the first team with proven players.

        1. What’s your point? Of course every club has success and failure in the market. The point is that when we recruit a young player like Chukwuemeka here, there is a huge probability that he’ll need time to adapt. If we recruit an older player, the odds tell us there is a higher probability of instant success. We can go for young players to develop, it’s fine, but in this case we need a midfielder and we should go for an older, proven player if we want the team to improve the team right now.

          1. I agree with your overall view about age, but a more important factor is which league the players are from. Players already in Serie A are far more likely to adapt and that’s the one thing the current regime are guilty of overlooking the most – signing from Serie A. Thorstvedt and Lauriente for example, would be much cheaper than some of the names linked and performed well in a poor team.

    2. Chelsea already rejected ACM loan offer for carney ( source fabrizio romano ) . Yes we need senior player or proven player ( but not cost too high probably under 50m euro ) for DMF & Striker. Fofana /wieffer are affordable for DMF or ACM can loan ugarte with option to buy ( only if PSG willing to loan ) . That brazilian DMF also interesting ( i forgot his name ) . I personally prefer fofana , he is hard working and have good experience also not injury prone. For striker , most likely ACM will lost to MU for zirkzee if MU serious they can easily pay 15m euro to kia, i prefer scamacca ( well he is not doing good at euro but in club he is goal scoring ) or poacher like dovyk ( same release clause with zirkzee but ATM are front runner for now ) . 433 trio midfield : Tiji ,Bennacer,Fofana will form solid midfield

  4. DiMarzio trying to make headlines where there are none.

On a side note, Milan is showing what to make of Chelsea outcasts with proper use and guidance. Should serve as an example to any player trying to join Chelsea.

    1. I think this is par for the course with regard to any club that has more money to spend than what it knows to do with. Same strategy can be applied to City, PSG, Barcelona (until recently), United, and now Newcastle. All of these clubs just buy a bunch of players every summer, even if they bought another player in the same position the prior summer. Two or three cycles of this and now you have a bunch of talent rotting on the bench and going on loan because there is no space. The result is discounted players for us. As you said though, the original sin is going to those clubs in the first place knowing you already have two or even three quality players in your position already there, instead of going to a club that can guarantee minutes. But of course, most see the dollar signs and not the warning signs.
