Di Marzio: Milan close to Emerson agreement despite conflicting reports

AC Milan are close to finding the final agreement with Tottenham for Brazilian defender Emerson Royal, but other reports claim the deal is going to fall through.

A report from Gianluca Di Marzio for Sky Sport Italia (via Milan News) has claimed that the deal is very close and Emerson is likely to be Milan’s next signing after Strahinja Pavlovic.

The negotiations between the two clubs have gone on for many weeks and it seemed like the gap was too wide, and Ben Jacobs reported earlier in the day that Emerson is no longer a priority for Milan and they will be addressing other areas of the squad instead.

Di Marzio does not include specific details about the deal with Tottenham but the Premier League side has been holding out for a fee of around €20m, whilst Milan were hovering around the €10-15m mark.

The hope is that the former Barcelona defender can compete with Davide Calabria for the right-back spot and even be the long-term replacement for him if the Italian moves on at the end of his current contract.

Signing Emerson would allow Milan to focus even more heavily on signing a midfielder and a new striker to compete with Alvaro Morata.

  1. I think we’re doing something else with all these conflicting reports. Something we will least expect. I could be wrong, but I don’t think Emerson was any closer to joining us then yesterday.

  2. We don’t currently have squad space for him. I’m not opposed to some right-back competition for 15M, but who gets taken out of the registered player list to accommodate him?

  3. I think that 95% this guy is arriving at this point – the remaining 5% is if ManU get interested. We need a decent attacking RB, and this guy can definitely fit the bill, despite his lack of game time last year

    1. The whole point in signing this guy is that he isnt an attacking RB. Dude has a worse xG and xA than Calabria and that is when you comapre Emersons best seasons with Calabrias best.

Just an awful waste of money and time

    3. No Milan does not need an attacking right back. Absolutely not! Don’t you have any understanding of positional balance? Theo gets forward, Calabria ( a very good defensive player) stays back. It’s really not that hard to understand, both can’t be going forward, they would be far too exposed to counterattacks.
I can always tell those who never played the game at any higher level. They complain about Calabria not being good enough in attack, that’s not his role. He is asked to stay back, he is helping the team there. If the left back had different attributes than Theo has, then yes you would want your right back to press forward more, but it would be completely reckless to do so as Milan is set up.

This is not counting Musah, who can skip the Serie A list but not the CL ones.

If Pulisic plays AM, and we get Samardzic, that leaves RLC to compete for the two CM spots

For Emerson, Fofana and Samardzic, 3 players need to leave. Most likely are Adli, Kalulu on loan and one of RLC, Saele, Bennacer. Thiaw also likely in case of good offer.

    1. Benacer, Saelemaker were outstanding in the US tour, especially Benacer is geting his form back, the ones to sell are Pobega Adli and Thiaw is not that solid.
      Thanks

  5. We shouldn’t rush in for a rightback, rather let’s bring in Jimenez to support Calabra. Even in the midfield, let’s not sign any other player because we have RLC, Reijnder, Musa and even bringing in Pulisic has an attacking midfielder. Let’s convert one of RLC or Reijnder to DM.

  6. Defensive midfield we got outstanding Benacer back to his form .Reijinder is more of a box to midfielder. Musa is also defensive midfield but very good in the right mid No 8 helping or playing alongside Chukwuweza .
    Thanks.

  7. Actually Milan no need more full back.. we already have lots of talent from primavera. Should Milan low budget and save that money from ex barca outcast…

  8. Actually Milan no need more full back and we already have lots of talent from primavera. Should Milan low budget and save that money from ex barca outcast. I think Alexis more capable than Emerson in full back position.
