Di Marzio: Milan have ‘chosen one’ in manager search – a multi-year project is ready

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan seem to have made a decision regarding who will become the new head coach and will now move into the final steps, according to a report.

The latest from Gianluca Di Marzio states that Fonseca is ‘the chosen one’ to be the next Milan coach and the Portuguese manager himself seems to have been convinced by the project that the club have put forward to him.

The former Roma coach has received a renewal offer from Lille (a multi-year deal, with a substantial salary) but is taking his time. Furthermore, a meeting with Marseille is scheduled for today because they are also interested.

However, Fonseca seems to have decided to join Milan, despite the temptations of many important opportunities that are still available in Europe, like Manchester United and Bayern Munich.

On a financial level, Fonseca would get less from Milan than what the two French teams (Lille and Marseille) would offer him, but the former Roma boss is convinced by the long-term project (three years) and the guarantees of a competitive team.

Furthermore, the possibility of a return to Italy is making the difference in the choice of coach. To arrive at the signing of the agreement, however, we will have to wait for Stefano Pioli’s exit to be formalised given the severance issue.

In the last few hours there have been and there will continue to be constant contacts between the parties to terminate the current agreement, and then at that point Fonseca will have to communicate the final decision to Lille and Marseille.

  1. From Paolo Maldini to Paolo Fonseca 🤡🤡 I never imagined after that scudetto that we will be in this position. I bet Fonseca is such a good coach that the algorithm guys of Chelsea United Barca, Juve and Napoli forgot to put him in the calculations but hey wait we didn’t!! Master move

    1. Inter are rubbing their hands at the disastrous choice by ACM Jokers pretending to be intelligent directors of an elite club
Please someone STOP this from going ahead Milan players and supporters deserve better!

  2. It would be hard to comprehend that of all the available coaches, Fonseca would somehow be the best option…

    1. I think there was an article a while ago, where the management explained they want a coach who will share his ideas with them rather than impose them. In other words, they want someone who is likely not complain/disagree if they sell a key player and target unproven players as replacement. The expenses of the coach are also to be taken into account. With all of those in mind, it makes sense to go for Fonseca rather than a bigger name who will want more money, ask for specific signings and demand that some players are kept in order to achieve results.

  3. Pathetic move by pathetic menagement. Btw ,what happened to Ibra ,he was all loud and a lion before ,now he is a kitten following Furlani-Cardinale clueless footbal moves.

  4. So much for all the theories. How do you pick this guy and how do the fans protest against lopetegui but have been silent for fonseca? I don’t believe this ownership wants to get back to the top.

    1. Every comment on instagram posts of Milan is how the fans dont want Fonseca and want cardinale out of Milan, so the fans are pretty vocal about it but who cares

  5. I feel like everything we did to recover in the last 5 years is all wasted. Unbelievable. I mean, I will give any coach his fair shot but he was LEAST CONVINCING BY FAR. especially knowing all these managers that are available and all these big teams without a manager only we were linked to fonseca. De zerbi is clearly a better choice. Smh it’s so hard being a milan fan sometimes, can never seem to get right anymore..

    1. Ya bruh .. and all the Milan fans saying hes not a bad coach , a misunderstood one or w/e I have one question for them – why he was never approached by a top club in his career or even now after his AMAZING season in France? And we competing for a coach with Marsille or Lille man cmon – thats our actual level i guess :)))

  6. It’s like Fonseca is the only couch that accepted less than 4ml since we know that people care about money nothing else but this time they will failure badly

  7. And just to rub salt in the wounds the under the radar work clearly hasn’t worked out well either as Motta has agreed to join Juve which tbf everyone knew.

  8. Paulo Fonseca is not the name that excites me and most fans but the same can be said for Pioli when he joined and we won a scudetto with him.

Despite what everyone is saying, Fonseca is still a better option to Pioli and in all fairness to him when he took over Roma they got rid of Totti, Di Rossi and they all sold off some key players.

There was also a huge injury crisis and some bad signings by Roma that didn’t help Fonseca. So for me he did a good job with what he had to work with at the time.

Fonseca is also not afraid of making changes in formation to get the best out of his players and he did that at Roma by switching to a back 3 which he got good results from including beating Juventus away from home 3-1.

My only concern is that Milan management needs to sign QUALITY PLAYERS this summer who can upgrade the quality level of the team.

No more risk signings like Kalulu, Thiaw, Musah etc. We need a summer transfer with quality ready made players.

Personally, I think Milan need to rebuild the defense and that includes offloading Kalulu, Thiaw, Tomori, Calabria and Florenzi. Only Theo is worth keeping.

With the sale of Maignan, Bennacer, Tomori, Kalulu and possible Adli we should be able to upgrade the defense, defensive midfield (at least 2) and a quality striker.

    1. Fonseca is the Portuguese Pioli on paper.

Of course I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt to see what he can do. But this is hardly a convincing appointment in a time when Gerry & Co had to get things right…

      1. pretty much spot on, reality is that Paolo Maldini was fired for wanting to take the next step, yet again the ownership reaffirm their goals to be a midtable club and live of the great Milan name. We gonna sign cheap players and cheap managers and hope for a shot in the dark. This is our sad reality and people need to come to terms with it, including me

  9. Smart management decision process.

Zlatan: “better get my friend bommel, we can give him cheap salary”.

Moncada: “better get fonseca, he know french league. I and him can have great discussion about who we will recruit from french. His salary also cheap, just 3 mil.

Furlani:” from my banker perspective, either one i approve”.

Cardinale: “i choose fonseca, he have better slick hair than bommel. I love someone with slick hair, like myself”
