Di Marzio gives Milan-Zirkzee update and names ‘most feasible’ striker signing

By Oliver Fisher -

Gianluca Di Marzio spoke on Sky last night and he provided an update regarding AC Milan’s hunt for a new striker, suggesting Joshua Zirkzee is no longer an option.

It is a huge summer for the Milan management as they must appoint a new head coach and then begin work improving the squad by making additions in each department if they are to bridge the gap to Inter.

At the moment the only certainty seems to be that Paulo Fonseca will be named as the new manager within the next couple of weeks, and we recently profiled the kind of strikers that he has worked with during his spells at Braga, Shakhtar Donetsk, Roma and Lille.

Di Marzio spoke on his segment for Sky last night and he was asked for the latest on Milan’s pursuit of a centre-forward, with his comments relayed by Radio Rossonera.

“We don’t think there is an striker close to AC Milan at the moment. There is a list of candidates, certainly at the top it has been and there is Zirkzee, who however has particular evaluations in terms of requests from the player’s agent,” he said.

“I’m not saying they’re as much as the player’s price tag, but a little less… he has high costs, it’s not even a given that Kompany won’t bring him back to Bayern Munich and keep him there.

“To date, perhaps the most feasible one is Gimenez from Feyenoord, Guirassy is closer to other clubs, especially abroad. The striker market revolves around Osimhen, Sesko, and then the others will follow suit.”

    1. I think he meant that the top strikers available this summer are Osimhen and Sesko and that when these two will move, the rest will follow. Probably Napoli will steal one of our targets when they will have sold Osimhen. Get ready for Furlani congratulating himself when Jovic will be our starter and score a brace against the Primavera at training…

        1. Jovic was barely effective as a backup for Fiorentina. He can only score when the other defenders are focused on Leao and Giroud. I think Okafor will have more playing time anyway because Fonseca is here to make our young players shine.

          1. He played 1242 minutes combined over all tournaments which equates to 13.8 full matches played and scored 9 goals and made one assist. If that isnt effective then i dont know what you are expecting from a substitute who plays sparingly, Add to that when he arrived he was visibly weighing too much, if he can stay fit he might do even better.

This. He’s not a lone striker.

          3. It doesnt really matter to me as its good to have different types of forwards choices so i completely disagree with the sentiments. The narrative that he cant score while alone up front also has its flaws even if he is best with one man next to him he has actually scored goals while also alone up front. He has proven he can be a value to the team but sure he shouldn’t be our starter.

          4. I think we’re not on the same page here because I was implying that he could be our starting striker haha

Fonseca will play with Leao on the left of course and a right winger, so there won’t be two forwards. Then if Jovic is the main focus of the opposite defenses in the box, I think we’re doomed 🙂

          5. I did get that but he can be used as a substitute and there might be matches where we change system either during or from the start.
Anyways i definitely think he deserves to have his contract renewed and i think it will happen as he is already owned by us and is cost efficient at 2.4 mil if i remember correctly.

I think he deserves an extension too but I also think he should not be used as the lone striker. Ever. Even Okafor is 100x better in that role. But when we’re trailing and need goals, put him on as #10 or next to the #9 and he can help the team.

          7. Well that is fair enough and surely Okafor can be utilized there too and I’m not disagreeing that Jovic also do better with a man next to him but he can nevertheless in my view still be used as a sole striker from time to time towards the end of matches.
We definitely needs a marquee signing nevertheless up front and it will be interesting to see who we end up buying as it could be decisive on how we fare in 2024/25 season so they better get an already great one or one right on the verge of greatness.

          8. Yeah. A 20-something goal scorer is one (the first?) thing we need to fight for the scudetto next year. There is no room for flops/mistakes here.

    2. I think what the article means is that we have to wait until Osimhen (surely will leave) and Sesko (stay or leave – not to Milan obv) issue resolved first, only then the other strikers on the chessboard will start to move.

  1. Precisely this. There are some players who are worth the money and will increase a lot further in value. Sesko is one of them I believe. I just wish we could be the team to go bang! Signed and watch everyone else take note. I was too young to fully appreciate the magnitude of signings like lentini, desailly, savicevic, papin, weah and co. You think you win a scudetto and the build is coming when in actual fact you sit still, decline even, watch Madrid win their 7th CL in the last 20 years and announce mbappe the next day with endrick on the way. Man them days of being 1 CL behind Madrid are a distant distant memory. Longing for the day we actually start catching them up

    1. “I was too young to fully appreciate the magnitude of signings like lentini, desailly, savicevic, papin, weah and co.” This. As much as I can say I started watching Milan during late 80s, really and truly my football brain didn’t start til much much later on. I was mesmerized by those players though but wasn’t capable of fully appreciating what I was seeing.
You mentioned the UCL titles. I always wondered if we ourselves had a galacticos era that it would have been both us and real that would have been competing for most ucls with a much smaller gap. We were as big as them in the 2000s in that regard but now no longer 😔

      1. we were at 7 and real madrid at 9 so yeah we could and should have been far closer had it not been for berlusconis last ten years of lousy investments at the club. I’ll never forgive that we ended up so far behind.

  2. Zee was never an option. None of these targets in the 40-60mil range ever really are. This is media fed by agents to drum up interest for their clients.

If last summer is anything to go by, management is quietly looking at 20-30mil options elsewhere that media haven’t caught wind of.

    I just don’t see a 40mil+ splash on a striker.

  3. Yeah but what’s crazy is we actually have the budget and don’t have a ton of needs to fill, maybe only CDM as something half-way pressing. We could actually spend €100m on a striker. Instead these guys are off looking at backup RBs.
