Di Marzio: Newcastle back in for Milan defender – new director leads the charge

By Oliver Fisher -

Having been linked earlier in the summer, Newcastle United have relaunched their interest in signing Malick Thiaw from AC Milan according to Gianluca Di Marzio.

Milan have so far only completed the signing of Alvaro Morata who arrived on a four-year deal from Atletico Madrid so most of the focus is on getting various targets over the line to help the new head coach Paulo Fonseca.

However, there continues to be rumours that players could leave too, both in order to free a spot in the squad for anyone who might arrive but also because of the funds generated through the transfer fee and wages saved.

As Di Marzio reports, Newcastle are ready to go back in for Thiaw. The Premier League side had already been following the German defender at the beginning of the summer but could now seem ready to move strongly.

At the moment, no official offers have arrived in Milan’s inbox, but the Magpies are very interested. The former Schalke defender is particularly liked by the new sporting director Paul Mitchell.

Last season Thiaw made 30 appearances for Milan across all competitions but he had a campaign that was heavily disrupted due to injuries. Transfermarkt have his market value at €25m.

      1. Bennacer hate is so weird from the fans. I swear y’all have the memory of a goldfish when remembering what these players have done for us. Bennacer already bounced back and him with Fofana and Reijnders will dominate the midfield next season.

Even if you sell him, you have no one on the market with similar quality and skill-set that this management can sign for 12M, maybe Rabiot but how on earth is that an upgrade idk… and he will never agree to 5M deal when he rejected Juve for 7-8M

        1. It’s crazy. Bennacer should be untouchable!

I get the sense that he will be sold to pay for whatever cheapies are coming in eventually.

          Also, why sell Thiaw?
What is the point in signing young guys if you’re just going to sell on for moderate profit. Are we Udinese?

        2. It’s weird for me too, I don’t just get it, no midfielder comes close to Benny in this present squad, from inteligent passing to fighting spirit, and Pioli still didn’t help his cause, always substitute the dude at 60mins. The reason I want him gone is so he can flourish elsewhere and enjoy his football cus many fans certainly don’t deserve him.

          1. Bennactis the only press resistant midfielder we have in the team. Boggles my mind that they would want to move him on. One of the very last few mids that actually plays defence for us 🤦‍♂️

  1. Newcastle fan here 👌 Just personally love doing business with Italy teams as Serie A is the best 🔥👌👊🤘 Always been my fave league so when we are looking at players from Italy it gets me fired up

  2. Every season since The toon army who won something when 👂come into money i think what they really need is an actual scouting department seeing as they seem to pursue every Milan target. And or take our players with gambling habits. Newcastle get some scouts and maybe a trophy or two. Or even 7 Champions league trophies 19 serie a titles the list goes on .

    1. I think the other way around, Thiaw is highly error prone and overrated ngl, what does he do that for instance Gabbia can’t? ok, a bit over average passing skills. definitely not a 40M now, nor do I really see him on any top German CB level, maybe more like Anton, just average

Get 40M and run, until they figure s*it out!

  3. I don’t mind him leaving. I was disappointed at his last year performance and how Thuram exposed his weaknesses. I wish we had someone in management with half brain cell to go for Buongiorno instead of leaving him to go to Napoli. Unfortunately he is Italian, and our scouting genius only watches Ligue 1. We will soon become another version of inter 90’s and early 2000’. Disgraceful

  4. Tonali-Thiaw swap deal would make sense. Samardzic, Fofana, Tonali, RLC, Rejinders, Benacer would be great midfield. Then buy one good right back, Center back, and another Center forward. We are done! Defence of Tomori, Pavlovic, Gabbia, Kwior + Kalulu during injuries would be decent line..

    1. That would be a literal miracle if we end up with this squad:

atk: Morata, Leao, Pulisic, Okafor, Jovic/Colombo, Chukwueze, Fulkrug

mid: Samardzic, Fofana, Tonali, RLC, Rejinders, Bennacer

def: Tomori, Pavlovic, Gabbia, Kwior, Kalulu, Calabria, Theo, Terracciano, Jimenez

      gk: Maignan, Sportiello, Nava

110M plus Thiaw would be roughly our cost.
out: Pobega, Adli, CDK, Krunic, Brescianini (re-sale clause),
Saelemakers, Colombo/Jovic, Simic, Florenzi, Origi, Ballo-Toure

around 85M, a bit low but the last 3 are basically minimal to no actual income. so even if we have to slightly have to spend extra 10M on Tonali, I think it’s still worth cause the entire mercato would cost us 35M

  5. Well if we get Pavlovic, then I can’t see why we have to keep him at all cost. All the physicality will be covered by Pavlovic. And all the agility will be covered by Tomori. We also still have Gabbia (who performed great) on our roster.

    1. If ACM sell thiaw, thats making only 3 CB left : tomori ,gabbia , kalulu . Fonzy want to make kalulu RB compete with calab, so even if ACm success buy pavlovic thats still 3 CB left ( simic already out)

  6. I hope Newcastle go for tomori to partner him with botman, just to see if maldini’s dream centreback partnership is really that good.
