Di Marzio: Newcastle back in for Milan defender – new director leads the charge

Having been linked earlier in the summer, Newcastle United have relaunched their interest in signing Malick Thiaw from AC Milan according to Gianluca Di Marzio.

Milan have so far only completed the signing of Alvaro Morata who arrived on a four-year deal from Atletico Madrid so most of the focus is on getting various targets over the line to help the new head coach Paulo Fonseca.

However, there continues to be rumours that players could leave too, both in order to free a spot in the squad for anyone who might arrive but also because of the funds generated through the transfer fee and wages saved.

As Di Marzio reports, Newcastle are ready to go back in for Thiaw. The Premier League side had already been following the German defender at the beginning of the summer but could now seem ready to move strongly.

At the moment, no official offers have arrived in Milan’s inbox, but the Magpies are very interested. The former Schalke defender is particularly liked by the new sporting director Paul Mitchell.

Last season Thiaw made 30 appearances for Milan across all competitions but he had a campaign that was heavily disrupted due to injuries. Transfermarkt have his market value at €25m.
