Di Marzio: Newcastle United to secure signing of teenage Milan defender

By Oliver Fisher -

Cathal Heffernan’s time at AC Milan is set to come to an end as the teenage defender is heading for Newcastle United, a report claims.

According to what is being reported by Gianluca Di Marzio in his live blog, a deal has been completed that will see Heffernan leave the Milan youth sector and join Newcastle, following Sandro Tonali who went to Tyneside earlier in the summer.

Heffernan joined Milan in the winter of 2022 on an initial loan deal after quite the saga in which the operation was off and on at various points. That then became a permanent deal a few months later.

The 18-year-old has been linked with Newcastle over the past couple of weeks and it was even reported that the Republic of Ireland starlet played in two pre-season friendlies for the Magpies U21 side, which have essentially functioned as trials before the move officially takes place.

    1. Depends on how much Newcastle will pay. Last year he played for the U18, so our coaches didn’t think he was that good yet , played only 5 min for Primavera and was a few times in the bench …compare him with Simic since Simic is a month younger and played plenty for the Primavera… and the same can be said for other players like Bartesaghi, Eletu, etc.

So yeah, not sure how you come to the conclusion that he’s a big talent, unless you saw the games of U18 which I doubt.
