Di Marzio: Samardzic, Chiesa, Abraham – Milan’s work not done after Fofana deal

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan have got the breakthrough they wanted on the Youssouf Fofana front but their work on the mercato is far from done with three more names being eyed, a report claims.

Having reached an agreement with Monaco for the arrival of Fofana, Gianluca Di Marzio reports that Milan are already working to find another reinforcement to give to Paulo Fonseca. First, however, the Rossoneri must resolve the Pierre Kalulu situation, which has endured a slowdown.

Fofana will be Milan’s fourth summer signing , but he may not be the last. The directors have signed players for the positions outlined at the start of the summer (centre-back, full-back, midfielder and striker), and are now monitoring various opportunities and following different profiles.

Milan is in fact following the evolution of the situations of Lazar Samardzic and Federico Chiesa, who are expected to leave Udinese and Juventus respectively before the window slams shut in a couple of weeks.

Tammy Abraham is the third name that the Milan management are keeping an eye on, having been identified by Paulo Fonseca as the ideal deputy to Alvaro Morata for some time. Milan are following all three situations but are still evaluating whether or not to make a move.

  1. If we land Chiesa (we need a solid starter/deputy for wings and CAM positions) and Samardzic… We will have ourselves a very formidable team… Forza milan

    1. The Chiesa possibility is a gamble but a gamble worth taking. Firstly he plays on both wings and CF, he has an incredible shot, is a very good dribbler and a match winner.
He is injury prone and has had major operations but is only 26 years old and you could see him develop more into a Centre forward in the coming years ,one who is eager to prove that he is not done.
To be honest this is an opportunity that is too good to be true as it’s not everyday that Juve will be in this desperate position they find themselves in and we must take advantage.
Obviously,on the downside, someone in attack will have to go and that’s a hard one .

  2. If we sign Samardzic, I’ll give this an A+ Mercato. 9 out of 10. If we can get Ballo-Toure and Origi out, it will be 100000000 out of 10 lol.

As far as Chiesa, while I found the idea interesting others had a good point that we really don’t need him. And as far as Abraham… I thought we were keeping Jovic?

  3. I actually think they should be done with signings now, unless it is for Abraham. No room for Chiesa in this squad honestly unless you are going to sell Chuku. And Scarmdzic is not necessary . Pulisic needs and deserves to be starting and Liberali is waiting in the wings. The squad is already a little too big and I’m quite happy with the attacking players we have. No more signings unless we sell some players. Too many players leads to unhappy players when they don’t get enough playing time.

    1. That’s a fair point with Samardzic. If he arrives, our team does look quite large. And someone like Adli would have to leave.

    2. we don’t need to sell Chuku to get Chiesa… we need to sell Salad and I think that might be a gamble considering the injuries Chiesa has had but I think it’s a good bet since Chiesa basically has no celling if u compare him to Salad.

      1. Exactly. Its a bit of a gamble but if Chiesa gets in shape we will have Leao lvl player on the right that can take defenders on his own. Also we can rotate him with Chuk to keep him healthy.

    3. I agree. Would love cameos for Liberali – he’s not ready to be a protagonist.

The thing is if either Puli or Chuk get injured then we have to have a plan B. Also the season is long with a lot of games to be played. Tired legs and all.

Gonna need sensible rotations. Especially at CAM. Not a big fan of playing RLC there.

      1. Only if both Puli and Chuku get injured at the same time do we have a problem. Obviuosly Pulisic we know can play RW if Chuku gets injured. And RLC can play the ten if Puli gets injured. Not to mention Saleamakers while I wouldn’t want him to be an every game starter can be a decent fill in if needed. While I do like Chiesa and how dynamic he can be at times I actually prefer smaller squads. I think players need to play consistently to be at their best. Also while having strong competition for spots can sometimes be a good thing it can also be a negative for certain players as they can become afraid being replaced if they make a mistake which is not a good way to play. I’m quite happy with the squad as it is now.

    4. Almost agree. Still not DMC regrettably. I see Fofana as similar to RLC, so there are still something lacking for the defensive positions.

  4. I might second posters who say that we need a deputy for Theo, other than that all of the above named are either unecessary luxuries or need us to offload some players to make room.
    – Bringing Chiesa while we already have like 3 players who can play in the right wing and 2/3 players who can play in the left wing is a bad idea. Some suggest to swap Saelemakers for Chiesa, but Fonseca likes Saelemakers and Chiesa would have a much bigger salary.
    – Abraham hasn’t convinced in a while (due to injury) and we already have 3 strikers. So unless Jovic go (which doesn’t seem like a good idea) why would we need Abraham ?
    – Samardzic is an attractive profile, not gonna lie, but we will need Adli to go.

  5. Samardzic and Chiesa is perfect… Tammy can be the cherry at the top of the cake…

That’s how Inter dominated the league (2 to 3 good hungry to win players per each position on the pitch)…

Everyone was crying bouh squad depletion due to injury, they were busy shuffling the squad and getting the results…

    1. What’s the point of that analogy? Dyou want to bring back 34 years old non-EU Pato back? There’s no sense it you comment anyhow

  6. If Leao magically leaves in some big offer late in the window (which I would take, because I’ve never seen him really press effectively and I think Fonseca wants to press), then I’d snag Chiesa in a heartbeat. I think he bends the defense in different ways. I’d also rather sell Jovic and sign Abraham. But I like our attack right now and messing with too much will cause us to take longer to gel and get firing.

    1. Thats another reason to get Chiesa now. Leao might leave if not this then next year, the threat is always there. But then someone like Chiesa will cost 40mil. I would rather get him now on expiring contract for 15mil, even if it won’t work out in worst case you can still offload him later for something close to that.

      1. The boy never said he wanted to leave. The financial is strong (we buy without having to sell), and now you want to sell your best attacking player and replace him with another player with the same salary but play for 30% of available matches for the ability he clearly already lost?
There’s a reason why Juve didn’t extent him. Save your precious heart beats for something that makes sense.

        1. Where did i said that i want to sell him ? Will you people ever learn to read without adding words of your own ? The threat of Leao leaving is always there. If we get a big offer the club will sell, same as for Tonali who didn’t wanted to leave either. Thats what im saying, not that I want Leao to leave, i want him to stay. Anyway having another top winger for cheap is good either way. We are covered in case he leaves and we are covered on the opposite wing in case he stays. Juve didn’t extend him cause he didn’t want to stay in Juve, same as Dibala couple of years ago. He argued with Alegri.

    2. Why would you rather have a Roma castoff instead of keeping Jovic who finished last year well and did well in preseason?

Whenever a team offers you a player, ask why they aren’t keeping them. You’re spending money to help a team get rid of someone they clearly don’t want, and if Abraham isn’t good enough for Roma why is he good enough for Milan?

  7. I don’t feel like we really need any of these three players. I think we need a good deputy for Theo more than we need any of these 3 but I see no movement in that direction. Thankfully Theo is very athletic and rarely misses games except for discipline reasons. As long as Fonseca can convince Theo that he can’t dissent with the ref and keep collecting yellows for that, it’s not as critical to get a deputy for him, but it would be good to have one (and no, Terraciano shouldn’t be it).

Chiesa: we have as wingers Rafa, Okafor, Chuk, Pulisic, and Alexis. Why do we need a 6th winger, and an injury-prone one? It would just decrease playing time for the others and make them unhappy. And Chiesa would require a big salary. No, let’s not get Chiesa.

Samardzic: we have three players capable of playing CAM: Puli, RLC and Liberali. Samardzic is likely better than RLC at CAM so it is conceivable that getting him is not the worst idea, but it is not an area of critical need.

Abraham: Also injury prone and we have Morata, Okafor and Jovic, with Camarda coming up. For Abraham to come, we’d need to sell Jovic.

For Samardzic to come, we need to sell Adli. Actually I’d welcome that; Adli is a nice guy and a good Milanista but he never truly convinced me.

If the mercato ends the way we are now, I won’t regret it. I think we are all set, now. But sure, maybe if we can sell Adli and buy Samardzic, that’s a plus.

  8. Chiesa gives us Pulisic down the middle and an extra option off the bench in behind the striker. Super sub and incredible depth. For 15 million if we can get his wages down makes us serious contenders now that Fofana is closed.

I trust Jovic off the Bench with Chiesa coming on as a sub as well with fresh legs more than Salad combined with Abraham and that move is cheaper.

    1. You don’t pay 6 million for a sub when your best paid player is on 7 million and your starting striker is paid 5 million. He rejected us and sugned for Juve before. If you see the history recently, any business with Juve always cost us more

  9. After that point, All Milan need are market opportunities. I wouldn’t trade Salemaekers who found his legs and can play in different positions for injury prone Chiesa. Hermosa can be deputy for LCB position and Theo. Adli, Pobega, Ballo, Origi should leave. I could go for Samardzic as I am not sure about RLC for AM position also Cardoso would be fair replacement in case Benacer decides to go.

    CF – Morata, Jovic, Camarda
    LW – Leao, Okafor
    AM – Pulisic, Samardzic, Liberali
    RW – Chuku, Salemaekers
    CM – Rejinders, RLC, Musa
    DM – Fofana, Benacer (Cardoso)
    RB – Royal, Calabria
CB – Tomori, Pavlovic, Gabbia, Thiaw, Hermosa
    LB – Theo, Jimenez
    GK – Mike, Torriani, Nava

That would be pretty competitive squad. We should also consider that this season we will have 8 CL group matches not 6 and any more depth players wouldn’t harm us..

  10. No room for any of them unless we make 2-3 sales first. Would all be useful options to have and improvements over our current depth (though I think left back is our weakest depth in terms of replacement) but I don’t think any of those three becomes an instant starter.

  11. With Fofana signed for 20m (fixed) we are already at the 35m transfer cap set by redbird. If Adli leaves for like 12m we can spend that on another signing, plus the probable 3.5m for Kalulu’s loan and that’s it, since I don’t see Bennacer leaving.

So Chiesa is out of the question unless it’s a player swap. The Americans won’t pay his salary anyway. Abraham or another striker could only arrive on loan. Samardzic it’s possible, if we sell those two then we have around 15m to offer unless we generate more money by selling other fringe players.

    1. 35m? In all the articles I read about Milan this season, it was that this season we would have around 90m/100m to spend on signings.

      1. lol sorry mate. Will never happen with Redbird. 35m is the budget every season, and we just hit that cap with Fofana considering all the arrivals and departures.

100m is the budget of clubs like Man UTD.

  12. Well, chiasa coming in Will not affect the team list. He is an Italian so we don’t need to sell. For Samardiz we don’t need him for now. In his position, pulisic, tijjini and RLC can play there. Except we will buy him and leave him there

  13. Jovic is better than Abraham. Liberali’s minutes nose dive if Samardzic is signed. Chiesa would be okay, as he’s Italian. He won’t stay fit so won’t take away anyone’s minutes.
