Di Marzio: Sarri believes Milan squad is ‘tailor-made for his ideas’

Maurizio Sarri has been heavily linked to the AC Milan job in the past, and the cycle is beginning once again with Paulo Fonseca’s job heavily insecure.

There are two previous occasions where the 65-year-old has been close to getting into the head coach office at Milanello, and this summer, perhaps, was the third example of this. When Stefano Pioli was sacked, Sarri had just left Lazio, and it seemed a move was possible.

Nevertheless, Milan opted for Fonseca – a decision which they may already be regretting – and with rumours that the Portuguese head coach is close to losing his job, Sarri’s name is once again in the mix.

Gerry Cardinale may prefer to go for an Italian coach, and this idea is also liked by the fans according to reports. The biggest detail of all, though, is that Sarri believes the squad is ‘tailor-made’ to his ideas, according to a report from Gianluca Di Marzio. Previously it has been questioned if the manger would join mid-season, but with him liking the squad, this eliminates this issue.

Milan and Sarri have never formed a partnership, but with his belief in the squad as it is, if this is conveyed to the management, it could be a match made in heaven.

  1. I too think this team is made for him. What he did at napoli was amazing and the way he had them playing. This milan team is very very similar to that napoli team in terms of player characteristics.

  2. When you are unemployed and desperate for a coaching job, every squad is tailor-made for you.
Jorginho was a main cog in the wheel for Sarri’s Napoli. What Milan player is tailor-made to play that role?
Sarri’s teams played possession dominant football, the same kind of football Fonseca wants to play, but Milan has players suited for counter attacking football.

    1. @Z. Totally agree. For me Allegri is our best option. He has the leadership qualities to make this Milan team better. Allegri is no different from Capello. Boring football but he wins titles and his defense is solid.

    2. I have to agree, even though I like Sarri a lot, he’s been one of my favorite coaches for years, but I just don’t see him solving the problems of this squad.

  3. Okay fonseca sucks. But sarri will not be able to play his game with a Lazy Leao on the pitch and a midfield that is to scared to turn with the ball when put under pressure. All they did against liverpool was play the ball straight where it came from. Back to tomorri and a shaky pavlovic who didnt put a foot right that evening.

    1. Is Lazy Leao any less defensive than Insigne? I see Callejon in Pulisic. Midfield is where there is the greatest difference is, but Reijnders can be the “Hamsik”, RLC can be the “Allan” and Fofana can be the “Jorginho”. Again, they’re not exact analogues, but there you have it. Sarri will have the best LB he’s ever had, and an RB that is no worse than Hysaj. In 2017-18, Sarri’s Napoli finished 2nd on 91pts, 4pts behind Juventus. That Napoli had a slightly better midfield (see above), and Koulibaly, but I think our current forwards are overall better than that Napoli’s and our fullbacks and GK are better than that Napoli’s.

      1. Leao isn’t just lazy but he has a personality type that “sees” what the crowd is seeing and how he appears to the crowd. He is mentally incapable of blocking the outside world out and focusing on the game. This is why he doesn’t hustle and never will. Compare Ronaldo to Leao… Ronaldo is laser focused on the game and only the game while Leao is worried about how he appears to the crowd.

Balotelli is another example of someone who just can’t block out the outside world while he is playing.

        1. But there is nothing we can do about Leao right now, is there? Pioli struggled with him, Fonseca is now struggling with him. Any coach will have to deal with that. You think Guardiola would magically change Leao? The common denominator is Leao, not the coaches. So, kind of a straw man argument here vis-a-vis appointing Sarri, or whoever. We will have to deal with Leao the best we can until next summer and then I say we get rid of him, use half his money to get a replacement winger (a RW even, so Puli can play in his natural position) and spend the other half on a high quality DM, and that will be the end of that era.

  4. The last time they played transition football was during the scudetto season. That DNA is Ling gone, right now they are in the wilderness and maybe Sarri is just what they need to get some direction in their play. At this stage nothing works so I am open to Sarri bringing in some identity…and for what Sarri wants to introduce you need chemistry between 11 players, not one that dictates play.

  5. I pray who was the clairvoyant who read his mind on the issue?
Our coach was carefully and meticulously by a “god”, a lion among kittens. Our squad thoughtfully assembled like the avengers by the genius scout moncada, wages sorted out by none other than Furlani, a lifelong fan since he was a wee baby.
So the question is: who dropped the ball? Who gets fired for the abysmal performances? Was the all seeing eye of the lion blinded by his ego and arrogance? He may think that it’s best to attract all controversy to himself and distract the fans from the disaster he has orchestrated. At whose desk does the buck stop now?

  6. At this point, any good coach willing to jump aboard the sht boat will be welcomed.

Which top coach would want to work for Zlatan the boss? An idiot bragging in the media two days after coming back from holidays, while the team is sinking, having an argument with Fonseca already… The whole atmosphere is toxic. The clowns are getting rid of Fonseca to save their job and they’ll look for another yes man/scapegoat. If we’re lucky, the next coach can do wonders but with that management hope is a luxury…

  7. He’s perfect because he will hit the ground running with new ideas, he commands respect, and he knows the league backwards.

This is about identity. He will give us one in the short term. He is 65, this is a two/three year cycle for him to put us back on track (and, I believe, probably win something). Then we can talk about project managers.

Gerry, this is your chance to show the fans that you make the decisions and want us to succeed. Your proxies botched the summer, now show us you’re the Gordon Gekko around here!

  8. Move the budget around and send Ibrahimovic to talk to Jurgen Klopp. That’s the role Ibra was truly hired for. Klopp would fit right in to Italian football.

  9. Fonseca will remain Milans coach unless an elite coach like Klopp expresses his availability again. As it stands Milan are already losing out on revenue due to ticket sales so their next managerial appointment must be an elite one. They can’t afford to hire a coach like Allegri due to his brand. At the moment Milan don’t own their own stadium and is already being taxed on revenue from ticket sales. They will definitely suffer more losses.
