Di Marzio: Seven candidates including Conceicao as Milan outline manager identikit

By Isak Möller -

AC Milan are expected to part ways with Stefano Pioli at the end of the season and several managers have thus been linked with the club. The current list of candidates is quite long, per a report, but some are more realistic than others.

In a report published on his website, Gianluca Di Marzio has outlined the type of manager that Milan are looking for. Furthermore, he also highlighted some of the candidates on the Rossoneri’s radar, including the favourite Julen Lopetegui.

Indentikit outlined

For the post-Pioli era, Milan want a coach of an international calibre who knows what it takes to work with young players. The feeling is also that the manager won’t be an egocentric or prominent one, but rather a manager who can reason with the management and work in a team.

The management has already added several names to the list and these will be presented to Gerry Cardinale and Zlatan Ibrahimovic. Only then will a decision be made on the manager, albeit always with all parties involved in the discussion.

Before going into the main candidates, the rumours regarding Christophe Galtier and Marcelo Gallardo have not been confirmed, while Paulo Fonseca was evaluated initially by Milan without going any further.

The candidates

Lopetegui appears to be the favourite for now, as the report continues, having met with the Milan management several times in the last few months. The Rossoneri appreciate his methodology and willingness to share ideas and strategies if necessary.

West Ham could be an obstacle, though, as they could offer a much higher salary. At Milan, a deal would be worth around €4m per season for two years, with an option for a third year. The Spaniard is willing to wait a bit longer for the Rossoneri too, but he’s not the only target.

Xavi Hernandez, formerly of Barcelona, is one of them and Thiago Motta is another. The latter has been heavily linked with Juventus as well and it might be too late for Milan. Ruben Amorim, the young Sporting manager, is an option and so is his compatriot Sergio Conceicao.

Finally, the likes of Thomas Tuchel and Unai Emery are also on the list. Other profiles such as Antonio Conte, Vincenzo Italiano and Raffaele Palladino are not part of the plans and the same can be said for Roberto De Zerbi.

    1. Honestly it’s an absolute shambles that we let juve get ahead of us for motta and we’ve seemingly given up his track at this point, especially as its not as if piolis potential sacking hasn’t appeared out of thin air. If I were them I’d do everything in my power to snatch motta from juve, this is the near future of Milan on the line and therefore the right manager is key.

    2. The chances of us getting Unai Emery are very slim, but I wouldn’t call him a bad name. The man has more Europa Leagues titles than I think any manager in history. He has elevated Sevilla, Villareal and now Aston Villa to levels they’ve never reached before and for some of them ever since. Now how would he succeed in a bigger club who wants to win scudettis and UCLs is another question all together.

  1. Unai Emery?
    Yeah, OK.
Di Marzio credibility has been doo doo since Benzema exposed him.
No shame in that man’s game. He just throws names off the cuff, without any thought behind it.
Aston Villa paid money to get Emery away from Villarreal and he has a contract that expires in 2027 that pays him cool 7 mil. Why would Aston Villa let him leave when they are 4th in EPL and in the Conference league semi final?
    Media just makes up names.
They have no clue, just speculate.

  2. Not sure why people are constantly complaining. All these are just rumors. We have been linked with 10 managers in 4 days. At the end we might get none of them. As long as Fabrizio doesn’t give us any updates no news should be taken seriously.

  3. Alberto Gilardino, Gasperini, Motta, Abate

I have feeling one of those can lift Milan to another level with young squad we have

  4. Lopetegui and galtier are 57 now, at that age they should be showing more than they have, even guys like conte and sarri that we dont like have better cv’s than these guys, gallardo doesnt have any european experience at 48, everyone thought that after pioli the issue of a manager will be sorted for atleast the next 4years, but the new milan still want to behave like the old milan, its boring to be complaining about the coach each and every season, seems zlatan and cardinale wouldnt want their egos to be tempered with, bring a big guy or a big prospect in the house

  5. The best names mentioned in the article are Tuchel and especially Emery. I doubt Emery will leave AV this summer, but Milan getting him would be a big move for Milan. In particular, he knows how to deal in European competitions.

  6. The most likely coaches Milan consider will be either Motta, Christophe Gaultier or Paulo Fonseca. I don’t believe the rumors about Lupotegui

Motta is considered because of his work with young players at Bologna who also has a better defensive record than Milan and they play better football. But he might be already on his way to Juventus.

Fonseca is considered because of his work at Shaktar Donest which he one a lot of titles back to back and his work with developing young players is really good. He’s also doing a really good job currently at Lille.

In all fairness to Fonseca, his only bad performance was at Porto and Roma. Porto sold their best players after winning the Portuguese league when he took over and they ended up finishing 3rd the year Fonseca coached them.

At Roma they only started playing bad after the team had several injuries and Roma had a terrible squad during his 2 seasons there plus the new American owners didn’t invest in squad. So I can’t blame him too much for that.

Christophe Gaultier is friends with Theo family since he played with Theo’s father at Toulouse. He also coached Leao and Maignan and he won Ligue 1 in 2021 with Lille. He also won the league with PSG.

So Christophe Gaultier is a good candidate in my opinion because if he arrives i doubt Maignan, Theo or Leao will leave or be sold. This in my opinion is a good move to keep these players in the squad.

  7. Who do people expect Milan to hire ?

I’m genuinely interested of knowing since it seems like all the names that are being posted are dismissed.

Milan are not able to hire managers like pep, Arteta, Klopp, Zidane or Ancelotti. Milan is not of interest to those managers. They want bigger projects.

You have to be reasonable of who you’ll get.

  8. Go all in for Thiago Motta…
You wasted TIME For NO REASON, as if we haven’t seen Pioli the last 4 years

Do it now before it’s too late

PS: Amorim and Conceicao are both good options, but I will never forgive the board if they lose out on Motta to a direct rival, because they waited for Pioli
