Donadoni praises ‘important’ Tonali and names what Leao must do to join ‘special elite’

Former AC Milan midfielder Roberto Donadoni has praised two of the current stars at the club and admitted that the Scudetto win last season did not take him by surprise.

Donadoni was interviewed by the newspaper QS and was asked to give his thoughts on Milan after they ended their 11-year wait for the league title last season, with his comments relayed by PianetaMilan.

“I challenge anyone to say ‘I expected it’. But I’m not surprised. Pioli is a valuable coach, with great skills. Great credit to him, to the managers, to the whole club: they managed to put together many components to hit an important goal. I hope they will continue on this path,” he said.

One of the key performers during the Scudetto win was undoubtedly Sandro Tonali. He made his loan move from Brescia into a permanent in 2021, and he grew into one of the best midfielders in the league, scoring some important goals.

“He is establishing himself at a level all of us, but above all the club, had seen in Brescia. He had difficulties in the first year, but these were promptly denied: he proved to be up to the task and now he is a very important player for the team, despite his young age.”

Rafael Leao has continued his Serie A MVP form from last season as he continues to be decisive for Milan. So far this season he has played 8 games, amassing 3 goals and 6 assists and proving himself to be one of the leaders of the Rossoneri despite his young age and the margins for him to become even better, as Donadoni explains.

“He has excellent potential, he is showing incredible things and when he acquires even more continuity then we will be able to say he is among the special elite of players who really make a difference.”
