Donnarumma admits Milan gave him ‘everything’ and compliments Maignan

Gianluigi Donnarumma has spoken positively about his time at AC Milan and admits that the club gave him ‘everything’ to succeed in the sport.

Speaking during his press conference ahead of Paris Saint-Germain vs Milan in the Champions League (via Milan News), the Italian goalkeeper spoke honestly about his past at Milan and what he expects from the two games against his old team.

His departure from Milan back in 2021 caused a lot of anger with fans thinking he had chosen the riches of PSG over Milan.

Donnarumma still spoke very positively about Milan, saying: “A very emotional match for me. To find AC Milan again is a great emotion, a special match. But I have to leave the emotions outside and think about the game. I am very well here, there is a big family at PSG as there is at AC Milan. I’ve been there 8 years, the club has given me everything and I’ll thank them forever. But I feel good here, I found an incredible environment from day one. The fans have welcomed me very well and I try to give my best for PSG.”

He also had a lot of praise for the man that replaced him, Mike Maignan. Donnarumma wished him luck for the future.

“Maignan is a great goalkeeper, he is a starter for the French national team and I am happy with what he is doing. There is mutual respect and I wish him the best of luck for everything to come, including the national team,” he said.

As mentioned, Milan fans can be very quick to criticise Donnarumma but the goalkeeper does not like to dwell on it, saying: “It’s a pity because at AC Milan I always gave my all until the last game. But now there’s no time to think about that, there will be a way but now I’m focused on the match which is difficult, exciting. I must not get caught up in the emotions.”

Milan face PSG twice in quick succession now, and on the games he said: “An important match, difficult. Their strength is the compactness of the group. I know Pioli, how he prepares for matches, we have to be careful. We have prepared for it very well from all points of view and we are ready for this challenge where we will try to win. There is no favourite, the group is very balanced. We will draw the conclusions at the end but we will try to win the game.”

  1. Sometimes you need to be your own man like Ibra. Though you both had the same agents he dictated the terms of his career. Letting other people do that for you takes the narrative away from your hands. So while Dollar may have a legit argument that he gave his best for Milan and that his heart loves Milan, he also let other people smear hid own character by their actions, not his. He’s become associated with their decisions. Hence, why he’s not liked. He could have put a stop to it. Check your contract, get involved in the negotiations because that says more. Ibra literally told Mino to make Milan happen or else he’ll go find an agent who can. No shopping him around, none of that nonsense. The agent work for you, not the other way around

This. No way getting around it.

  2. Why didn’t anyone ask him about PSG wanting to buy Maignan to replace Donnarumma?

I wonder how he feels being replaced by his replacement at Milan.
