GdS: Strong doubts persist about Mariani’s decision to award Napoli a penalty

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan’s long unbeaten run of 22 games in Serie A was ended by Napoli last night, but there are some question marks about the performance of referee Maurizio Mariani.

La Gazzetta dello Sport (via PianetaMilan) gave a rating of 5 out of 10 to Mariani because he was badly positioned to see the contact from Sergino Dest on Khvicha Kvaratskhelia but he was able to evaluate the contact made in real time.

Massimiliano Irrati on the VAR called him over and Mariani still had the chance to make a judgement on how capable Dest’s touch on Kvaratskhelia was in terms of making the Georgian throw himself to the ground in the way he did.

The paper believes that the penalty was far from clear, given it took two minutes and seven seconds to make a call on what really happened between Dest and Kvaratskhelia.

The referee – although not well positioned – was convinced that the Milan defender had taken the ball and while there was contact, Mariani could still make a call when seeing the replay about the strength of the tackle.

There were two yellow cards that should have been given: Alexis Saelemaekers on Stanislav Lobotka (8′) and that of Ismaël Bennacer who blocked a breakaway from Piotr Zielinski.

  1. This time the referee was ok
There was a touch so you can’t just ignore that.
And as it mention above, we were lucky to avoid a few yellow cards.

    1. I don’t know what to make of the penalty, Mike could have saved it though, Giroud could ve put Milan ahead if he was clinical or calm, Kalulu was too nervous, and this not the first. And it is costing Milan. Great game though

      1. Kalulu has to improve on his finishing. Composure is very key in the final third. Against Juve last he couldn’t nail it and has to hit the crossbar against Napoli too something. Good game though but we need to be clinical

  4. What doubt could there be? It was clear as day, he kicked the guys foot and got none of the ball. That’s a penalty every time. Stop with these nonsense articles.

  5. That’s a penalty sorry…come on now. Even with my red and black coloured glasses it’s still a pen.
If anything Mariani it VAR was Kim throwing Giroud to the ground which I thought wasn’t called because it went against the flow of the game and I thought to myself that it might bite us in the long run if Napoli went ahead

  6. It was a clear penalty. Milan played well and had the better of the chances. Just one of those days where luck was not on our side. The team will grow and learn from this game.
