Emerson believes Milan are ‘too strong’ to not finish in Champions League spots

Emerson Royal has often been polarising this season for AC Milan, but that could also translate to the squad as a whole. Now though, they are looking upwards.

Milan’s season as a whole has been difficult to assess. There have been moments of brilliance, but they have often been hidden behind frustrating results. Como, for example, seemed to be heading towards the latter, but it could be argued that it ended with the former.

It was just the latest example of the Rossoneri’s spirit under Sergio Conceicao, and his ambition is seemingly being ingrained on the players already. The Portuguese has stated that his team need to be focused on reaching the Champions League spots, and this is being repeated by his players.

After the game against Como, Emerson spoke to SportMediaset (via Milan News) about their ambitions for the rest of the season, and his words followed the same idea of his coach.

The first league win of the Conceiçao management has arrived. Can Milan reach fourth place?

“Yes, when we talk about Milan we have to keep this in our heads, because we are Milan, we are too strong, and this match will be very important for us because in the last few games we haven’t done very well.

“We are fresh from the Super Cup win, against Cagliari we didn’t win but against Como we did. We have to continue like this because if we continue like this, winning all the matches, we can reach fourth place.”

Can you win in Turin?

“Yes, it can be won. With this team here at AC Milan you can win with any team. But for us the most important thing is to continue like this, working as a team, in all the matches, and I think this is the most important thing.”

Is it true that Conceiçao asked you to be more offensive?

“Yes. Conceiçao told me on the first day to take off the handbrake and attack. And that’s why I came here, I did this at Betis, at Barcelona, in all the teams I played in, and the trust the coach is giving me is important.”

What is Milan for a Brazilian?

“For a Brazilian, Milan is the biggest club in the world, because you see so much in Brazil. Ronaldinho, Kaka, Cafù, so many players have worn this shirt.”

  1. So this is him with the handbrake off?

He came here to attack? Mama Mia that is something he is incapable of.

I’m just sorry I didn’t pursue a career as a full back, it’s pretty sweet, getting millions and MOTM awards despite not being able to pass, cross, shoot, dribble etc. He can’t even run fast.
It’s like I’m living in somebody’s LCD trip

    1. Serie A was just trolling us and it was his birthday that day. The award means nothing to begin with. It is like giving Messi the balon d’or in 2032 for the World Cup he won in 2022

  2. Er… Yeah…I’m not sure I share his opinion. With Musah protecting him during the defensive phase then there may be some relevance….🤔
But let’s not discourage the man….😜

  3. |Dude is the luckiest footballer this year. From the bench warmers of mid table EPL club to starting line up in CL team. Despite playing horrendously, he is still in the starting line up

      1. Not really. Fonseca is irrelevant and shouldn’t be taken seriously.
Tomori has also displaced Gabbia, what should we conclude ?
Coaches chose starters based on a lot of parameters, and being better isn’t necessarly any one of them. Calabria is more likely than not leaving, so it makes more sense for the new coach to rely on Emerson who is likely to stay. Plus Conceição has a very aggressive type of pressing and perhaps is more likely to chose a physical type of player.
And finally, but this is just a supposition, the management might have requested him not to use Calabria too often, since they want him gone.

        1. There’s clearly a direction not to play Calabria.

The management started backgrounding Calabria in the media around the time of the contract negotiations.

I am not sure what the driver is – whether they’re annoyed he asked to be paid a salary reflective of his seniority at the club, or whether they just don’t like having a person who is so senior influencing decisions.

When Fonseca was freezing out Tomori and the club was attempting to force another sale, there were reports that Calabria and other senior players were encouraging Tomori to stay.

As to the motivation behind it all I just think there’s all these random directors who need to justify their existence by endlessly fiddling on the transfer market. A bit like when consultants come into business and then hang around like a bad smell for a few years.

I also don’t rule out backhanders. There’s far too many people making far too much money out of the transfer market, and very few of them are actual football players.

  4. Emerson makes me believe I could have played for Milan so I’ll always thank him for that 😅
Last time someone gave me the same feeling was Bakaye Traore
