GdS: Family, faith and food – the secrets of Giroud’s love for his new life in Italy

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan are enjoying their decision to bet on Olivier Giroud and to bring him to the club during the last summer window as he continues to score vital goals.

La Gazzetta dello Sport writes about how the fans have already really warmed to Giroud, something seen at the end of the win against Napoli during which he scored the winning goal. After the game the Frenchman thumped his hands on his chest and encouraged the fans to keep singing, clapping the travelling support before heading for the dressing room.

He is 35, has won almost everything in his career and has scored almost 250 goals, winning a World Cup and a Champions League, but he enjoys moments of glory with the enthusiasm of a 20-year-old.

Coming to Italy was a happy landing spot for him not only in sporting terms, but also in personal terms. His Italian grandmothers – one from Bergamo and the other from Trieste, named Yvonne and Tonia respectively – make Giroud a person very attached to Italy.

Giroud and his wife Jen have four children in their new home: two girls, Jade and Aria, and two boys, Aaron and Evan. He has very strong family ties, taking his eldest daughter horseback riding and one of the boys to play football.

He also has a very deep faith that he has often spoke about in interviews and of which the body bears witness among his numerous tattoos. Like the opening verse of Psalm 23: ‘The Lord is my shepherd, I lack for nothing’. He has it written in Latin and got it done after asking for his mother’s opinion.

Every week on his agenda is an appointment via Zoom with his London Pastor to study the Bible. Then, the former Arsenal and Chelsea man likes visiting Lake Como, indulging in some pizza and a tiramisu every now and then.
