Mediaset: FIGC informally probe Milan boss Pioli over availability to take Italy job

By Oliver Fisher -

Italy’s worst fears came true last night as they were eliminated from the World Cup play-offs at the semi-final stage by North Macedonia, and now the search for a new manager is on.

According to reports from SportMediaset (via MilanNews), the future of Roberto Mancini as the head coach of Italy remains very uncertain after the elimination in Palermo last night, and the FIGC are already looking for potential successors despite the fact he won the European Championships last year.

The FIGC have already received a positive response from Fabio Cannavaro and he would be joined by Marcello Lippi in the role of technical director. There does not seem to be any reason why the agreement with Cannavaro and Lippi could now fall apart, but there are other options.

The broadcaster adds that the Federation have also informally probed the possible availability of Stefano Pioli of Milan and Andrea Pirlo, formerly of Juventus.

  1. Leave Pioli for Us. We still need him.

Fabio Capello or Arrigo Sachi should be considered.

Maybe Arrigo would be able to create an invincible team of italy

  2. He can lead any national or club team in the world but not now, let it be next year because by then Shevchenko is ready to take over.

    1. What are you nuts, Andriy is not the man to lead Milan, he has proven that with the messes he’s left in his wake, Inzaghi, Gattuso, and Seedorf hell even Pirlo have better club coaching records. Wouldn’t mind either of those 3 again, maybe even Frank Rijkaard, or Mancini. But not Sheva, he’s not a good club coach.

      1. Speaking of Gattuso, I think he’s actually the one Italy need. He’s got the attitude and grinta that Italy will need now, he’s won the WC and he’s a good coach in his own right. Italy needs a real leader and I think he’s it at the moment.

        1. I second that. The way the team just fell off was pathetic. They have no grit and without Chiesa they have nothing offensively. At least Gattuso would bring back the heart. Barardi’s limp display also proved that Milan should look elsewhere for RW.

    2. Shevchenko is like Lampard, they run out of ideas and are very limited tactically. We don’t want to finish 10th next season so no.

  3. I can easily see Pioli managing the Azzurri some time in the future, but not now. He seems happy at Milan and the Milan rebuild project is going very well with him.

Also, people shouldn’t assume that if you do good at a club then you will do good with a national team.
People said the same thing about Ventura, and we all saw what happened.
Managing the national team is a whole different dynamic.

  4. PIOLI Would be smart to turn that job down.
Italian football is in tatters right now. Just look at our clubs in UCL over the last decade.
Government Blocks clubs from investing in private stadiums and other youth facilities that may help them make more money.
All because they want to keep making stadium rent money from clubs.
There is no real youth facilities or structure at many clubs.
Italian clubs are full of foreigners. Serie A has not marketed itself properly and lags behind all of Europe.
Be glad Mancini at least gave you the Euros.
