Fiorentina deny plans to pull out of Supercoppa but Napoli don’t as Milan watch on

By Euan Burns -

Fiorentina have denied earlier reports that they are planning to pull out of the Supercoppa Italiana but Napoli have not released a similar statement.

As reported by SempreMilan.it, Fiorentina released a statement on Tuesday afternoon refuting the claims, saying: “We have never communicated that we do not want to participate in the next edition of the Italian Super Cup. We deserved to play in the Super Cup and therefore we will participate regularly. We were annoyed by the rumours that circulated about us turning back.”

The initial reports were that Napoli and Fiorentina were angered by the proposed dates of the mini-tournament in Saudi Arabia and cited fixture congestion and travel as the main reasons.

If Fiorentina do not take part, it opens the door to Atalanta. If Napoli do not take part, it is AC Milan that would take their place.

Napoli still seem to be sceptical about the tournament and their president, Aurelio De Laurentiis has said: “Deficient those who want to go to Saudi Arabia to play the Super Cup. Have you seen what is happening in Israel? There could be an air blockade on those territories.”

  1. Hope that Milan don’t replace any teams going to this farce of a competition.

No point in playing this and exhausting the players further in Serie A.

    1. will be embarassing if we get put in,rival fans wont let us forget that we made top 4 because of rube point deduction and now this.Plus no one needs another milan derby disaster

        1. It’s a nightmare 😫 😔
I’m scared of Inter whenever they face Milan.
The last 4 have been fair but they humiliated us the last time.

    2. On the other hand if we participate and win it, we’ll have secured at least one piece of silverware this season, which is more than what we did last season.

If we’re pulled into this, I’d favor sending our B team. If they boys then can beat Fiorentina, cool. If not, well, it was the B team.

Besides, it would give to our B players another opportunity to play together, gel, and get more harmonious (Chuk, Jovic and Okafor would get another try). We’ll be needing the B team to manage the crowded calendar, so, one single game for the boys to play together shouldn’t be the end of the world.

  2. This is during the transfer window. I hope no one participates for the right reasons but is the reason not the fear of returning with only half your team?
