First thoughts on Milan’s schedule in the Champions League group stage

By Isak Möller -

AC Milan’s schedule for the Champions League group stage was announced earlier today and although there was never going to be ‘an easy way’, the Rossoneri have been dealt a decent hand.

Stefano Pioli and his men were drawn into the ‘Group of Death’, also known as Group F along with Paris Saint-Germain, Borussia Dortmund and Newcastle. On the other hand, the group is wide open and there are no clear favourites.

The schedule was announced this morning and Milan will start at home against Newcastle. The reverse fixture will thus be the final game of the group stage, but the two games prior to that will be played at San Siro.

Round 1, September 19 at 18.45 CEST: Milan-Newcastle

Round 2, October 4 at 21.00: Dortmund-Milan

Round 3, October 25 at 21.00: PSG-Milan

Round 4, November 7 at 21.00: Milan-PSG

Round 5, November 28 at 21.00: Milan-Dortmund

Round 6, December 13 at 21.00: Newcastle-Milan

As said, there was never going to be an easy way or a favourable schedule for that matter, but one could argue that Milan have been dealt a good hand. The two games prior to the final game, against PSG and Dortmund, will likely be decisive and it’s good that the Rossoneri will play them at San Siro.

Furthermore, starting at home is always a bonus as you want three points to kick off the Champions League campaign. Either way, it will be difficult for the Rossoneri who will have to use all of their quality to advance to the next round.

What do you think about the draw? Would you have preferred Milan to start away and end at home? Let us know in the comments below!

  1. Although we got the hardest group(and Inter AGAIN got walk in a park) I really think we can top it. And thats not me being unresonable.
Firstly, P$G doesnt have any speciality in their playing style. Yes they have Mbappe and got Kolo Muani, but apart from that are mediocre. Only attack, midfield and defence nowhere to be found. Their game is based on sending ball through to Dembele and that Ninja Turtle and thats it.
Then BVB. Good going foward but when we put Leao, Giroud, Pulisic and then Chukwu of the bench, their defence is bound to be exposed.
I honestly think that Newcastle is going to be our hardest matches, especially away. Just hope our boy doesnt score against us.
But at the end I can see us topping the group without that much problem.

    1. Dont care about Inter, but they actually were in a group with Bayern and Barcelona last season. Wouldn’t call that walk in the park.
PSG and Dortmund are tough, but they are not Bayern and Barcelona.
Milan had the easiest group anyone can ask last season. Chelsea, Salzburg and Dinamo.
But, Milan can still finish top of the group, as long Calabria doesn’t play in the PSG games.

  2. hard group on paper, but these teams this year are not what they used to be. each team has significant issues and we are on the rise. to be honest, we are very very likely to get top 2 slots. not the worst group imo.

  3. I will enjoy theese games and I think the players will be looking forward to play these big games. I’m sure they will not embarrase us. Small details like referee mistakes will decide if we go through or not.
But I want 20th scudetto this season.

  4. The Schedule is fair on Milan side but in champion league, you can say never cos surprises can spring up, and least expected team goes through…. It won’t be easy but Milan will have to sweat it really out to qualify…. So we will need hard work and a bit of luck if we can nail the two first games…. With Six point at the bag from the two first games, we can fight hard on the remaining games with couple of draws and perhaps we can go through.

  5. Don’t get carried away too much because all the other team in our group have built with strong players. It’s not gonna be easy as we think. Yes we have a good team so far but don’t forget we still a long way from blending all the new players. We like what we see so far and they even start their chemistry sooner than anybody would think but they may still lack the experience of adversity together

  6. This is a doable group. Dortmund is inconsistent, as is PSG for that matter, although the French have a lot of individual talent. MBappe VS Calabria will give me an ulcer even before the games start.

Newcastle is a mixed bag of d1cks… We struggle against the English and their pace, even against Chelsea last season who were terrible domestically. I don’t know what to make of them. Hopefully our team has improved enough to get some points in this group and progress.

    FORZA MILAN ⚫️🔴

    1. BvB are all offense and zero defense. They regularly lose matches like 5-4, and have for years.
This group at Milan should be able to score on their porous defense and slow down their offense enough to win

  7. It’s really really early days still and although we look good, many things can change by the time these games come around. Form can dip, injuries and so on. But I think it’s a doable group of we maintain our form

  8. By the way, for those of you fearing Newcastle and still pining for Tonali, he’s been pretty useless in the first half as Newcastle fall behind Brighton 0-1.
Newcastle are not doing well at all in their second season under Eddie Howe. The rest of the EPL has figured out his tactics and the weaknesses of his team, and Tonali is definitely one of the weaknesses. Some of the other midfielders who played last season for Newcastle did much better than Tonali, because one of the keys to Howe’s tactics is a fierce high press and mid-press, and Tonali doesn’t do that well.

    1. …aaaand Tonali gets yanked from the match by Eddie Howe, once again (third match in a row he gets pulled early), in the 57th minute, after running around the midfield doing not much of anything.

Brilliant bit of business to off-load Tonali to Newcastle and get RLC, Reijnder, and Pulisc in return.

  9. You guys have so much if Newcastle..what about Dortmund.. playing two straight draws in the league and psg getting their First win last week.!I feel very strongly on us winning the group,no jokes…from what I have seen out players do on the pitch this 3 games…am optimistic of our chances on going through…Forza Milan
