The five key battles that could win or lose the game for Milan against Napoli

By Euan Burns -

AC Milan take on Napoli in a huge game at San Siro which will go a long way to deciding who faces Inter or Benfica in the Champions League semi-finals.

The two sides faced each other very recently in Serie A and it surprisingly ended 4-0 to Milan at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona. Stefano Pioli’s side then followed that up with a 0-0 draw at home to Empoli whilst Napoli won 2-1 away at Lecce.

The quarter-final first leg will be heavily influenced by some key battles all over the pitch. With Victor Osimhen out. injured, much of the goalscoring pressure will be on Khvicha Kvaratskhelia. That means there will be huge pressure on Davide Calabria to try and contain him down Milan’s right.

On the other wing, Hirving Lozano is expected to start and he has been in great form. It will be up to Theo Hernandez to limit the number of crosses that the Mexican can put in.

Further up Milan’s left side, Rafael Leao will be trying to get the better of Giovanni Di Lorenzo who has been the best right-back in Serie A this season.

In his more forward role, Ismael Bennacer could find himself trying to limit Stanislav Lobotka’s passing as he is the metronome for Napoli.

Finally, Kim Min-Jae will be embroiled in a very physical battle with Olivier Giroud who is leading the line for Milan.
