The five key battles that could win or lose the game for Milan against Dortmund

By Euan Burns -

AC Milan face a huge task tonight against Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League as they try to stay in the competition until the final matchday of the group stage.

A defeat and a win for Paris-Saint-Germain against Newcastle would result in Milan getting knocked out, so the Rossoneri players need to ensure they win their battles all over the pitch.

With Stefano Pioli expected to use a 4-2-3-1 formation, Ruben Loftus-Cheek will be in a more advanced role and he will have to ensure he gets the beating of Emre Can at the base of Dortmund’s midfield.

Going forward, the returning Olivier Giroud will be up against the extremely experienced Mats Hummels, whilst Christian Pulisic will need to get the better of Dortmund defender Julian Ryerson.

Heading in the other direction, there are two very juxtaposing forwards for the Milan defenders to deal with. Fikayo Tomori will have the tricky customer of Julian Brandt to deal with, whilst Malick Thiaw will find himself marking the more physical forward, Niclas Fullkrug.
