Florenzi: “Many similarities between Milan and EURO 2020 national team”

By Euan Burns -

AC Milan wingback Alessandro Florenzi has said that there are a lot of similarities between the current Milan team and the Italy team that won EURO 2020.

Speaking during a press conference in the Italy camp (via Milan News), Florenzi explained that there are clear similarities between this group of Rossoneri players and the Italy team that beat England on penalties at Wembley in 2021.

“During my time at AC Milan I found many similarities between the Rossoneri and the national team who were European champions,” he said.

“I had been saying it for a while, at AC Milan they didn’t understand me because they hadn’t experienced what I experienced, but you feel it when there is something and I felt it and said it, in the end I was happy to have been right.”

It was pointed out to him that there is a similar blend of young players such as Sandro Tonali and Rafael Leao along with older heads like Olivier Giroud and Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

“In all teams there has to be this right mix to create a winning group, at AC Milan I found many very, very good youngsters and some may become champions. But sometimes experience helps you too.”

Talking about Milan’s current technical director Paolo Maldini, Florenzi showed how highly he rates the former defender in his new role.

“I got to know him this year, he is a man of great values and with him I would also put Massara. They are the basis of the championship we won, the two of them with the coach have done a great job.

“They are very important people who can do well at Milan. A Milan without Maldini is a bit like a Roma without Totti and De Rossi”.

The future of Florenzi is not yet clear and it seems he has nothing to give away to the press right now about where he will be playing next season.

“Maldini doesn’t know what he will do between now and 30 June, let alone me. Now I want to do well with the national team, then there will be the holidays and then what will be will be.”
