Youssouf Fofana believed that the win over Roma was among AC Milan’s best of the seasons, and admitted his surprise at how well the new signings did.
Milan took care of business and secured their place in the semi-finals of the Coppa Italia with a 3-1 win over Roma at San Siro last night in what was an entertaining game.
Tammy Abraham netted a brace against his parent club in the first 45 minutes, the first with a towering header and the second a composed one-on-one finish.
Artem Dovbyk netted not long after coming on to reduce deficit, then Milan’s own substitutes – the new signings Santiago Gimenez and Joao Felix – combined to restore the two-goal lead.
The result means that Milan have a two-legged semi-final to come against the winner of Inter versus Lazio, and perhaps more importantly it generates hope regarding the trajectory of the team.
Fofana spoke alongside Sergio Conceicao in the post-match press conference minutes after the victory against the Giallorossi, and his comments were relayed by MilanNews.
Was that one of the best victories of the season?
“In general yes because we controlled the match, but not in reality because the final against Inter was the most beautiful. As for the quality of football we can say that it was one of the most beautiful victories, one of the not the best I think.”
Is Conceicao starting to pass on his ideas? Are Milan changing?
“Yes, because when he arrived, we immediately went to Riyadh and we didn’t have time to work. After a month, step by step, we are getting closer: he is happy and this is good for us. We have to reach the level he wants from us as soon as possible.”
Today you ran for Leao, Joao, Pulisic, Gimenez: are you ready?
“Yes, I’m ready to run in any case, even if I play coming off the bench. I’m also ready to run for myself: I’ll run for anyone.”
What surprised you about the new arrivals?
“We are surprised because so many players have arrived in 24 hours but I am not surprised by their quality, we are at Milan and Milan deserves players of this quality. I am happy for them that they played well.”
Do you feel ready to make a run for the Champions League?
“Yes, players who are not ready to reach these goals can stay home. We are all ready to get close.”
