Youssouf Fofana seemed all set to return to France on deadline day, and yet his move has fallen apart right at the end.
Fabrizio Romano reported earlier this afternoon that the deal that would see Fofana reunite with Paulo Fonseca in Lyon was done, even giving it the ‘here we go’ stamp.

According to Gianluca Di Marzio, the midfielder’s move to Olympique Lyonnais has definitely fallen through in these final, hectic hours of the transfer window. It comes after previous snags about salary split too.
What finally broke the bank was the intervention of the DNCG, French football’s financial watchdog. The body imposed strict restrictions on the club’s ability to register new players due to previous breaches.
Due to the failure to secure Malick Fofana’s sale to the Premier League, the DNCG reportedly never approved and ratified the Milan midfielder’s contract being deposited. This insurmountable obstacle forced Lyon to definitively withdraw from the deal.
With the French transfer window still open, another Ligue 1 club could still come in. Above all, Besiktas could be back on the trail of the midfielder, taking advantage of the transfer window in Turkey being open for a bit longer.
