Paulo Fonseca offered some further assessments on AC Milan’s defeat against Bayer Leverkusen in an interview with the club’s official media channel, and he reiterated his belief that they should have had a penalty.
Victor Boniface got the only goal early in the second half after the home side had dominated the first 45 minutes, yet Milan missed some big chances and can feel unlucky not to have been awarded at least one penalty.
Fonseca spoke to Milan TV at the end of the game to give his immediate thoughts on a frustrating night from a result standpoint but an encouraging one in terms f the performance.
What is your overall analysis of the match?
“I honestly think the result is not fair, because we created so many clear chances in the second half. We have this penalty, which I have already watched, which is clear, but above all because the team played well, created so many chances which is not easy against a team like Bayer.
“It is difficult because we lost, but I think it was the match that I liked the most of the team. For this reason it is true, in the dressing room there is a strange atmosphere because we deserved a different result, but I think we did everything.
“The team played well, created several chances against a team like Bayer. We have to move forward and as I said it is the match that I liked the most since I have been at Milan.”
The positive trend does not stop today with this defeat, right?
“No. It is true that we did not win, but there has been an improvement in our growth. It was evident. I am obviously sad because the players deserved another result, they played with great courage, they created several occasions. For this reason we must move forward, because the growth is evident.”
And this is the spirit with which we go to Florence with on Sunday…
“The spirit is always the same: to win. Today we came here to win. Sunday will be another match, with other characteristics. But we want to win, to continue our path, with victories, but I believe more when we leave the field with a match like this, playing like this, creating like this. It’s easier to understand that the team is growing even if we haven’t won.”
FONSECA. SMALL TEAM MANAGER 🤢🤮🇵🇹
Were we not watching the same match? Because I saw Leverkusen dominate us for a full hour. They could’ve scored 3 or 4 in that time. So yes the result is not fair because they should’ve won by a bigger margin.
The point is that when Milan started to really play, Leverkusen were pinned back at home. The problem is we started too late.
I dont know.. It seemed to me that the only reason we started playing better is because they got a bit tired and allowed us the ball
By the first half impression — the game should have ended ~5-0 for Bayer.
Milan could have snatched a draw in the end, but that does not take away the fact that Bayer were miles ahead & toying around with Milan for majority of the game.
The result is fair.
The result IS fair Mr.Fonseca.
Overall (and not during the last 30min) Bayer Leverkusen dominated, had more chances, more shots, played better,…
We missed a lot of opportunities and so did they. We could have drawn 1-1 but also lost 4-3 or 4-0.
We need to admit it when we were the worse team.
But there are some positives though, not gonna deny it.
No positives from this game period. The reason why we played better the last 30 min is because leverkusen players got tired and stopped pressing. In the first half you could see the difficulty of Milan players building up play from the back and they lost the ball in there own half more than once. Our midfielders are never close to each other as if each one is playing by himself. Abraham and Leao need to come closer to help in build don’t understand what’s the point of staying on the other half when we can’t even reach the ball to Fofana.
I understand that Leverkusen is a strong team but common you can’t be dominanted like this! One shot on goal and zero corners in 45 min.
Maignan really saved us here
Both teams basically has the same stats for the match so a draw wouldn’t really have been that unreasonable in my view especially when we consider that the ref and VAR room blatantly screwed us over during the match.
We could’ve scored four goals, too, in 30 minutes of total domination. Let’s not forget that the referee missed at least three yellows and one red in this game.
Also, it’s very important to mention that their goalie played better than ours in this game lol
someone said it.
Maignan really saved us here.
and besides the work in the goal he has the ball at his feet quite a lot.
