GdS: Fonseca ‘clinging’ onto Milan future after warning – what his job relies on

Paulo Fonseca, since joining AC Milan in the summer, has often been polarising. However, there is a growingly shared view that he may not be the right man to lead the club.

This is not the first instance that Fonseca’s time at Milan has been threatened, and by all accounts, it probably won’t be the last. However, this seems like the most damning time for it.

Despite continued efforts to grow into the season and a title fight, the Rossoneri have not shown their credentials of an ability to contest for the Scudetto, and it can be argued that they are not even showing credibility for a European place.

For this reason, Gazzetta dello Sport (as seen below) have stated that the Portuguese head coach is ‘clinging’ to hopes of a revival, as only Champions League qualification would save his job.

This season, the goal is to make it as far as possible in the competition, but next season’s qualification is paramount.

Fonseca, reportedly, is ‘hoping’ for his team to become ‘unblocked’ and start to find consistent results – something which he believes would instil confidence in himself and the project – but any signs of this unblocking are not showing. If anything, the block is worsening.

  1. I’m sure we will keep him the rest of the season and perhaps beyond…Why??? Because he is cheap and doesn’t ask for players and shuts the EFF up – and that is exactly what management/ownership wants in a coach. Brilliant

  2. If Milan gonna fire Fonseca and change the coach, question is who will gonna replace him, considering Milan are not willing hiring coach with big sum of salary. Cheap salary means cheap result, is he gonna be better than Fonseca..?

  3. So they are going to keep him this year and sack next, because there is no chance for him to qualify next season ucl .

    Milan deserved this. Specially Cardinale.

  4. Personally I would give him till the next draw or loss, although if that will happen in April or May then it will be fine. But if we were to lose or draw a game before the end of the year, then our chances to get a UCL spot might be next to zero, at which point, it will be better to look for a replacement.
A new coach (Sarri, Conceição, Allegri, whatever,…) would then be able to work with the team before summer and have enough time to determine who shall stay, which position shall be reinforced, which tactics, which systems,…
Moncada and Ibrahimovic (and maybe Furlani) because of their failure to get a good coach, and for getting players like Emerson Royal should in that scenario, also be sacked and Gerry needs to hire a good sporting director.

  5. Already too late to sack fonseca. The mess has already been done.
When he goes, furlani, ibra and moncada too should be kicked in their arse. They are all together responsible for this shambles.
