‘Play with courage, keep the ball’ – Fonseca happy with Milan players after Man City win

By Oliver Fisher -

Paulo Fonseca has praised the way that the AC Milan squad have begun to put his ideas into action as his side won 3-2 against Manchester City at Yankee Stadium last night.

City struck first when Bobb found Haaland with a cut-back and he found the corner, but then the Chukwueze-Colombo began. In the 30th minute, Chukwueze crossed in and Colombo headed home then just four minutes later the striker finished with a volley.

The equaliser for City came from McAtee in the 55th minute but then Marco Nasti was the man who got the winner. In the 78th minute, Alexis Saelemaekers found some space to pull the ball back on the right side and it was met by a lovely first-time finish from Nasti, which proved to be the winner.

Fonseca spoke to Milan TV after the game to assess what was certainly an entertaining spectacle and also a positive result to start the USA tour.

“We have a good feeling. The most important thing is that we put into play what we worked on during the week,” he began.

“The players did what I asked of them: play with courage, keep the ball, find the spaces that are important. We have a lot to learn and I think that the match we played today was positive. It was important to win to gain confidence.

“We are starting to see our intentions. We need to improve the timing of things and I am active on this: getting the players to arrive at the right times and in the right positions.

“The players are coming back. We need to integrate them into our possession and continue learning: there is a lot to improve defensively and offensively.”

The tour will continue with training, events and work in the USA ahead of the next games against Real Madrid (July 31 at 02:30 CEST at Soldier Field in Chicago) and Barcelona (August 6 at 01:30 CEST at the M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore).

  1. Thing I like most about Fonseca is his humility, another thing about it, he cherishes players with technical quality, and anyone can make a mark..

  2. I wish he gives young players the chance to play. I love what he has done with chukwueze. No need to sign another striker. We have Colombo. Okafor. Jovic. Remember our gem camadar. Sign Kone and fofana. Get two strong defenders and we are good to go. Use puli as cam.

    1. Yes, it would be better to sign 2 midfielders, then get a Pavalovic, then the club could use Bakoune and Coubis, as defensive back ups , either as right backs or central defenders, they are matured physically to handle the rigours of serie’a . Fonseca has realised Alexis is a very good player, and he also realised the best position for jimenez is as a winger, he has the technical quality for that, the club should have tried to renew Daniel Maldini, then loan him out, or keep him, he has incredible physical attributes and he is technically very good, all he needs is a coach who believes in him.
It is beginning to be very glaring that Pioli was mishandling our players and is too timid to enhance new and young players.
