Fonseca presser

Fonseca insists Milan have improved ‘a lot’ in defence: “I will explain why”

When asked about AC Milan’s struggles in the defensive phase earlier today, Paulo Fonseca disagreed with the journalist and explained how the Rossoneri have improved. In his mind, there is only one thing left to figure out.

At the start of the season, Milan conceded far too many chances as the opponents were able to play through with ease. The situation has since improved and against Genoa tomorrow, they could record their third consecutive clean sheet at home.

During his pre-game presser earlier today, Fonseca was asked about defenders being too preoccupied with the ball, rather than following the man. The Portuguese clarified that the Rossoneri haven’t had these issues since the Cagliari game.

Modern defenders look at the ball a lot and not so much the man…

“I don’t agree and I’ll explain why. Up until Cagliari, we had this problem, of not defending crosses well and how we marked in the penalty box, between posture and other things. But after Cagliari, we no longer had this problem. We improved a lot, a lot. In Bergamo, we didn’t have this problem.

“We had a goal in which a player sat on Theo, which is a foul. And then we had a problem on a corner. I don’t think it’s a problem of defending the penalty box, but of corners. Against Red Star we defended well in the penalty box, Musah lost the ball and they scored from outside: it’s not a specific problem of defending in the penalty box. On this front, our defenders have made a lot of progress.”

Tomorrow’s clash is scheduled for 20:45 CET and Fonseca will make some bold changes to the XI, with both Alex Jimenez and Mattia Liberali starting for the team. Hopefully, the team will celebrate the 125th anniversary with an important win.

    1. Defense is always collective. When we have players like Leao, Pulisic or Chukwueze who are not good in defence. Calabria, Emerson and this year Theo who are generally bad in defence, there is big hole. Also Reijnders and Ruben Loftus are not so good.

  1. So, we “had” a problem defending crosses and according to Fonseca we no longer have one, but we do still have a problem defending corner kicks? It’s practically the same damn thing!

This guy is delusional. His excuses are no longer flying. He fires up excuses all over the place, including, he throws players under the bus. I’m sick and tired of this clown, this loser, this incompetent.

And the worst part is that he’s not going anywhere. The even more incompetent managers will keep him until the end of the season, and will only fire him when it’s final that we will not be making the next UCL (and we won’t) because that hurts the financial bottom line, which is the only thing they care about.

  2. “Modern defenders look at the ball a lot and not so much the man…”
Either im out of the loop or something . Is this true?? Don’t you need to look at both ball and man. Depending on the circumstances one more than the other.. When did modern defending become this?

    1. Man there is more to the statement than it seems…seems to be more about positioning and not a one thing only

Off a dribble.. you look at the ball so as not to get faked by the footwork, of a ball.. or as tracking back, marking a player not holding the ball what fonseca says makes sense… but hey what do i know…..

Not pretending to debate to even try and debaTe this

  3. How is he bad when he gets the results? No matter who you have as manager, Musah is losing the ball to Red Star in that situation

  4. @ luigi.what did u guys what dis coach 2 do,did u expect he 2 enter peach and play? pls, his tring to see the team work let encourage he small at list
