Fonseca reflects on time at Lille after departure: “I felt at home”

By Ben Dixon -

Today, Lille announced that Paulo Fonseca had left the club after two successful years in charge of the club, and following the news, he reminisced on his time at the club and took stock of his achievements.

Following today’s announcement, it seems that Fonseca will arrive at AC Milan shortly, as was reported in recent days, and with the window opening shortly, he must have a brief introduction period before the mercato opening.

There is a lot for the Portuguese manager to sort out in the summer, but there is arguably no better time to join. It will be a mercato where several stars are looked into, and he will be able to mould the side into what he desires with a very nice budget.

After his departure was announced, he spoke about his gratitude to the club, the fans, and the management, whilst reflecting on the successes he had, and his words have been relayed by Ben Jacobs on X.

“From the first day I arrived in Lille, I felt warmly welcomed by the players, the people at the club, the fans and the city. Everyone made me feel at home. During this time, at Pierre-Mauroy, I experienced some of the most exciting atmospheres of my career.

“Over the course of those two seasons, together we managed to put the team back near the top of Ligue 1, secure a play-off place in the UEFA Champions League and achieve the best performance in the club’s history in UEFA competitions. I have always given 100% and I can only thank the commitment and professionalism of the players I have proudly coached and the incredible support of all the fans.

“I would also like to express my gratitude to the management and president of the club for their collaboration and support throughout these two years.”

  1. Stay there if you feel like home, nobody wants you at Milan.

,, Over the course of those two seasons, together we managed to put the team back near the top of Ligue 1, secure a play-off place in the UEFA Champions League and achieve the best performance in the club’s history in UEFA competitions.”

So apparently 5th and 4th place is a top performance, someone should remind this clown that Lille won Ligue 1 before selling Mike, Leao and their good players.

    1. And someone should remind you clown that Lille sold all the good players after the they won the league. Sven botman, Maignan, Soumare, Renato Sanches, Timothy Weah, Jonathan bambe, Ikone.

  2. You are literally quoting what he said and then change the narrative to fit yours.
He said “managed to put back near the top of league 1”. He didn’t say that’s a top performance.
Leao was long gone when Lille won the league 1.
If you are saying that they won the league before they started selling their better players why are you expecting him to win the league with ther current players?
    Better coach than Pioli

      1. Can I suggest you to stop reading it and subscribe to Forbes’ newsletter so you can have nice speeches from Jerry to his shareholders explaining how he’s ambitious? Embrace the mediocrity if you want but most people are not fans of Milan for 2nd, 3rd or 4th place in Serie A and lame eliminations in European competitions.

        1. 2nd and 3rd is mediocrity? Wow, I thot I have seen worse in the last 4-5 seasons of our beloved Berlusconi’s reign. I am glad we now even have the ‘chance’ to be eliminated from Euro. We hardly even qualify back then. I apologised if I am having mediocre expectations. But I appreciate what we are now compared to a decade ago. If the Europeans (Berlusconi) or the Chinese (Mr. Li) cannot sustain the club, let the Americans try. If the Americans fail, try the Arabians. What I meant is, someone is going to buy/own the club somehow and run the club at their own expenses with their own directions. Perhaps one day when Milan becomes like Real Madrid, you and I can be the club socios to vote and elect the President to run the club. Until that day, I can only enjoy the game and not fret about things I cannot control. I have seen the worst, but now I see expectations rising. It is a good sign. I am relishing the journey more than the destination. Especially considering where we were a decade ago.

          1. I don’t like that argument because you’ll always find worse. But not long ago we won the Scudetto, developed world class players and had a management with the ambition to win.

  3. Once again…we went from mediocre to mediocre…the good news is, he will be fired within three months if he performs badly. The mistake of Pioli will not be repeated as he will have no thropy as a bargaining chip.

    1. ”the good news is, he will be fired within three months if he performs badly. The mistake of Pioli will not be repeated as he will have no thropy as a bargaining chip.”

Delusional. Cardinale is a cheapskate so he would at least wait the season.
      He’s not Zamparini
