Fonseca reflects on time at Lille after departure: “I felt at home”

Today, Lille announced that Paulo Fonseca had left the club after two successful years in charge of the club, and following the news, he reminisced on his time at the club and took stock of his achievements.

Following today’s announcement, it seems that Fonseca will arrive at AC Milan shortly, as was reported in recent days, and with the window opening shortly, he must have a brief introduction period before the mercato opening.

There is a lot for the Portuguese manager to sort out in the summer, but there is arguably no better time to join. It will be a mercato where several stars are looked into, and he will be able to mould the side into what he desires with a very nice budget.

After his departure was announced, he spoke about his gratitude to the club, the fans, and the management, whilst reflecting on the successes he had, and his words have been relayed by Ben Jacobs on X.

“From the first day I arrived in Lille, I felt warmly welcomed by the players, the people at the club, the fans and the city. Everyone made me feel at home. During this time, at Pierre-Mauroy, I experienced some of the most exciting atmospheres of my career.

“Over the course of those two seasons, together we managed to put the team back near the top of Ligue 1, secure a play-off place in the UEFA Champions League and achieve the best performance in the club’s history in UEFA competitions. I have always given 100% and I can only thank the commitment and professionalism of the players I have proudly coached and the incredible support of all the fans.

“I would also like to express my gratitude to the management and president of the club for their collaboration and support throughout these two years.”
