This time last week, Paulo Fonseca was halfway out of the door of Milanello, and AC Milan were evaluating candidates to replace him. Now, some a branding him a genius, and he spoke on the situation during this afternoon’s press conference.
Fonseca’s Milan career so far has been turbulent to put it lightly. In the summer, there was excitement about his football after some impressive showings in America against Real Madrid, Barcelona and Manchester City.
However, when the Serie A season began, the excitement quickly faded. The ideas that were working so well in America had faded and the squad lacked any form of identity, and with the results showing this, questions began to be asked about the head coach.
With only one win in his first five, it seemed he could be on the way out of the club if he did not taste success in the derby, but after a dominant victory, his job is secure, and he spoke about the change in perceptions in his press conference today.
Were you surprised that before the derby you were considered on the verge of being sacked and after the game you are considered a genius?
“We Latinos are like that. I have been in an environment that was like that: if we win we are the best, if we lose…. I don’t want to say that word [laughs]. I have done the same as I have done in recent weeks.
“Sometimes when we don’t do well we don’t want to read anything, but when we win it’s different: but for me, I didn’t change anything, I didn’t read anything.
“We have to keep working, keep learning, keep improving: that’s the most important thing for me. One day when I was in Portugal I went out with my son, he was 12 years old. He told me the fans were angry with me: I told him they were angry that day, and the next day they would applaud.
“This is what football is, emotion, moments of sadness and joy. To be a fan is to be this. It is not being balanced. I have to be the opposite, I am the coach and I have to be balanced.
“But I understand the irrationality of the fans’ love, I don’t have any negative feelings inside me for those who were not with me before and are with me now. I know that’s how it is.”

Stupidity of the modern football sphere.
Described here as a ‘dominant victory’, which is certainly wasn’t. Milan edged the game and did superbly in a hostile environment against one of Europe’s best sides, but the result could have swung on a few moments.
I think Fonseca should be allowed to do what he needs to do and be properly evaluated around Christmas to see if we’re heading in the right direction and have a play style that makes sense – writing him off after a few poor performances without a fit team or any pre-season together was always reactionary nonsense. The numbers are fine, there’s an obvious few flaws to address but he’ll need time to do so.
If we draw with Lecce no doubt the doom mongers will be back and the ultras will be blaming everyone but themselves again. Hopefully it doesn’t come to that.
It was dominant from start to finish, except the goal they had like 1 danferous chance and like 3 shoots that Mike had no problems with.
While we with a litte more killer instinct would have scored atleast 2 more goals.

They certainly did not edge it. We had so many chances and, especially in the second half, dominated inter, who, quite frankly collapsed. Agreed we need to step forward as all games are worth 3 points but anyone who watched the derby knows it could’ve been 4 or 5-1
