Fonseca: “You don’t see many matches in Serie A with a team as attacking as us”

Paulo Fonseca doubled down on his stance that AC Milan played well during their 0-0 draw against Genoa, claiming his side attacked like no others in Serie A would.

In what was supposed to be a night that celebrated 125 years of history, with trophies and legends on the field before the game, Milan were reminded how far they have fallen.

They looked slow and lethargic for most of the game against Genoa and ultimately failed to break down their opponents, being held to a 0-0 draw. Two chances that were created were wasted by Alvaro Morata, and the team were jeered off at full-time.

Fonseca’s comments after the game left a lot of fans confused as he thought the team played well, while after the game there were some very strong protests on display which he said he understood.

The coach spoke in the press conference room at San Siro after the full-time whistle and he tried to put a positive spin on the performance, with his comments relayed by MilanNews.

What kind of game was it?

“Normal protest. I fully understand the fans’ reaction. Today was a special day. But we have to be fair to the team: the players did everything to win. Only the goal was missing.

“Attitude, team spirit, they were there. We lacked quality, in the last decisions, assists, shots, but not everything else… I want to be fair to the team. The boys did everything to win.”

Are you concerned about the atmosphere around the club and the league table?

“We are not in the place we want to be. We are working in an honest way.”

Sacchi in 1988 had a similar position to yours, Berlusconi kept him. Should the management do the same with you?

“Honestly, I don’t need it. From day one, I’ve had the players with me, every day they show me that they are with me and that they believe in my ideas.”

The fans demand ambition. Can the market help?

“I think the team had ambition to win the match. You don’t see many matches in Serie A with a team as attacking as us today. The team were ambitious.”

Do you need anything in January?

“It’s not time to think about January. We have to think about working. At the right time we’ll think about what we can do to improve the team.”

      1. No striker, no creativity, no attacking threat, no good service to the attacking trio/quartet etc.

To sum it up: toothless attack. Even Genoa can nullify us without breaking a sweat.

  1. “I think the team had ambition to win the match. You don’t see many matches in Serie A with a team as attacking as us today. The team were ambitious.”
I guess a man who coached AS Roma into not qualifying for the UCL for 2 seasons in a row and Lille doesn’t get what it takes to fight for a title.
Attacking wise there are about 5 teams who scored more than us and we scored just 1 goal more than relegation level team Parma, so let’s not act like we’re a huge deal attacking wise.

    1. Not to defend Fonseca or his statement but you can argue its more complicated than its just about scoring a certain amount goals to be amongst the mopst attacking teams in the league.
For example how many shots a team has, how much a team is in the other half of the field etc. On the other hand the most scoring teams might just be more clinical in front of goal sitting back a lot more,
Anyways what matters in the end is who wins the most matches not who is the most attacking team not that I am aware of any stats putting AC Milan towards the top in that category.

      1. I agree that I somewhat missed his point, but in the end what matters in neither the number of attacks nor the number of goals, ranking is the only thing that matters, all the rest is secondary stuff.
Also the reason I wrote it like this, is that I’m fed with him constantly trying to come up with made up stats just to make the situation better than it is. It reminds me of Pioli who said that inter didn’t touch the ball for 4 minutes only for us to lose 5-1.

        1. That’s fair enough and Its not like we are in great disagreement here as I agree with what you are saying. I was in support of Pioli throughout his tenure with us though that is at least up until the last month or something but yeah I do remember that perplexing comment of his 😀 Not really the thing fans wants to hear after a 5-1 drubbing against Inter of all teams.

          1. I actually started being fed up with Pioli around that time and called for him to be sacked since early december when we exited the UCL. We were third around that time.
So I will be displaying double standards if I wanted a coach to be sacked while he was third but defending a coach right now while he is 8th.

          2. There was moments that irritated me a lot but I think the reason why we exited cl was down to some of players not taking their chances at crucial points as we could easily have qualified if we had known when to strike while the iron was hot.
One of those situations was Leao trying to score a rambona goal right in front of the goalkeeper against Newcastle in the first match at home. A win there would have sent us through the group. Then there was also missed chances against Dortmund if my memory currently serves me right.
It’s always good to not have double standards so I can understand and commend your approach to Fonseca and my patience with this current set-up from ownership, management to coach and to non interested players is pretty much gone but unfortunately what is the alternative ? my guess is to bring in someone cheaper I guess.

          3. “So I will be displaying double standards if I wanted a coach to be sacked while he was third but defending a coach right now while he is 8th.”

Well… You can play well and show “signs of better times” and still be 8th and you can be 4th and play awfully with lots of luck regarding getting the points. So the position in the table doesn’t tell the whole truth.

  2. He makes some good points but at the end of the day trophies are won by teams that win games, not by team that attack the most. I love the idea to be an attacking team that plays an attractive and entertaining brand of football but if that doesn’t bring results with it, what is the point ??

  3. Milan je pao a Fonseka zadovoljan ! Pa naravno par miljona je stavio u svoju bučiću ! Ibra izviždan i posramljen MORA OTIĆ pognute glave jer je dosta njegovog MALTRETIRANJA

  4. Good team is Winning in every matches, Milan is team who deserves Champions League and big four in Seri A.
Change the majority owner, change all directors, change Zlatan. Bring Back Paolo, Daniel, Tonali, Locateli
Min 50% Italian in starting eleven.
    That is Milan.
    Not only profit oriented.
