Footmercato: Strasbourg lining up move for Milan defender

By Euan Burns -

French side Strasbourg could soon make a surprise move to sign Davide Calabria from AC Milan if they fail to secure a deal for Guela Doue from Stade Rennes.

As reported by Footmercato in France (via Milan News), Milan are braced for a bid from Strasbourg for Calabria who was not expected to be on the move this summer.

The Milan captain is still expected to be the starting right-back under Paulo Fonseca next season but he is likely to have a new player trying to steal his spot in the team, which may well be Emerson Royal from Tottenham Hotspur if Milan can get the deal done.

Calabria has already spoken very positively about working under Fonseca and he has also been enthused by the arrival of Spanish striker Alvaro Morata, although there is concern over his contract situation.

Strasbourg only finished 13th in Ligue 1 last season so they would not be able to offer Calabria any European football and would presumably struggle to pay him the same wages he currently earns, so it would be a surprise if Calabria entertained the move.

The bid will never arrive if Strasbourg are able to sign Doue from Rennes as they are advanced in those negotiations and he is a far more affordable option.

    1. Yes Theo really showed his leadership last season when he lay on the ground whilst we conceded a goal.

Why do you hate our youth players so much?

  1. Seems we will cease to be an Italian club and be known as AC Internazionale, our history and identity a thing of the past, sad days indeed when we become what we detest the most, the blue side of Milano

    1. What top italian talents are available right now? Not any at all. Why would we lower the quality of pur squad just to fit low quality italian players? I suggest you follow another team to fill you cup.

      1. its weird if you don’t support having italian players and you support milan. you are aware of the history correct?

      2. You’re right with a player like Calabria we’d never win a Scudetto or make it to he semi-finals of the Champions League.

There’s no way a player like Calabria could go up against someone like Kvaratskhelia or Mbappé.

This new player that has never done any of those things is definitely the answer.

        It’s a vibe thing.

  2. I am serious considering my options either to continue supporting Milan or not how can a club like Milan sign a strike whom has not won any individual achievements as a strike it surprising.

  3. I’ll try to shed some light on a few topics, especially for the Fans who are always complaining of not having Italians in our team.

    1) The Italian players are not on that level as they were before.
    2) Italians who are worthy of a starting spot in the national team are already owned by the top clubs, and they won’t come cheap either (we also don’t have a budget to spend on such)
    3) Italians with good prospects also won’t come cheap
    4) Our management is trying to get the Italian core back through our academy (Camarda, Zeroli etc are being trusted)
    5) Keeping Calabria on the bench won’t be a good option, as there will be chaos in the dressing room sooner or later (Calabria is inconsistent as we’ve seen last season)

There are a lot of other aspects we as Fan’s can’t focus on, so lets trust the experts with what they’re doing and hope for the best.
At the end, they all want good for the club.. sometimes things go according to the plan, sometimes it goes the other way..

So let’s just wait and pray and see if things work out well

    1. Do you not, for one second, question why Italian players are at [whatever imaginary level you think is required]?

How do so many people just nod along completely unquestioning how a country of 60m people, that has won the World Cup four times, just randomly stopped producing players?

This is in a period when Italian youth teams have actually done reasonably well and then miraculously just lost all ability the minute they came into contact with the chaos of first team football.

I mean how does anyone think a youth player (or any player) can succeed in a first team squad of about 30 players, with about 10 new players added every few months, and another 10 sold or loaned, the loanees lent without seemingly any plan whatsoever for them to develop, and the total inability of these so called ‘experts’ to prioritise?

Where the f’ck is our DM?

The management had one job to do this summer and that was to plug the massive hole that they put in our midfield last summer when they dismantled our Scudetto winning midfield for no f’ing reason.

Instead they’re off unsolving problems all over the place.

“Looks like we have RB and captaincy sorted, what do you want to do?”

“Yep we need to unsolve that problem, get rid of the two RBs we have and find me another 2 RBs”

      “What about DM?”

“Nah leave that until TRANSFER DEADLINE DAY”

“What about these youth players. Seems like we might have a few good ones”

“I reckon either make them squad plater No 35 and 36 or put them on a loan cycle of a few years until they’re broken. We can then sell them for peanuts”

      “Thanks expert”.

  4. Strasbourg who just sold all their top players and are a youth farm team investment owned by Chelsea? Strasbourg who have no manager?

    Ridiculous

  5. I’m so tired of so called ,,fans” who want intalian players at Milan, Italy doesn’t have young promising players and the very few they have they ask for huge amount of money… look at Chiesa, Caliafori or Barella the italian team are very greedy and ask for big numbers, Tonali was an exception. So for people who wants italian players tell me what italians could play for Milan now?

    1. So we who would like more Italians on the team are “fans”?

You came with Gerry right? Yeah, that’s the new generation fanbase they’re targeting.

Pafundi, Prati, Kayode, Casadei, Fabbian. Those are just few names of Italian talented players available for 20 millions or less and are ready for first team action.

      1. Not Italian.

Not tired of the notion that we need Italians.

After watching the Euros it’s clear that the best team Italy can field is not awesome. I think we can agree there. Certainly some quality players like Bastoni, Donnaruma and Barella, but even the vaunted Jorghino was maybe above average.

So I like what I _hope_ I am seeing with Barts, Zaroli, Camarda etc coming up thru the new Futuro. We cannot fix a problem overnight caused by years of FigC mismanagement.

We can make a dent in the deficiency by investing in our academy (done, Futuro) and then bringing along the best of them.

        1. I’m not that bothered about whether they’re Italians or not.

I am more concerned that we have a youth team that has a success rate of transitioning top youth talents to senior talents of less than 1%.

And before people say – that’s totally normal, it’s hard to become an elite footballer.

          Well yes, it is hard.

Which is why it needs to be taken very seriously.

Not this farce of the endless merry-go-round of the transfer market and zero planning for how any players can be integrated into squad sizes of 30 plus.

Serie A has for the past 10 years has had some of the most transfer activity of the top 5 leagues and some of the biggest squad sizes.

          Loans are a farce.

The only reason Calabria made it was because he never went on loan. Anyone who does go on loan gets loaned to death until their value hits rock bottom and they become a problem that needs to be gotten rid of.

These elite athletes are treated like some kind of casual farm hands that move from job to job.

          It’s beyond amateur.

        2. I’m not Italian either, I’m from a neighbour country but a fan since 98′.

In my opinion (again, it’s my personal opinion) a certain club must have their core built by its domestic players be it English, Italian, Spanish or French club.

And as I said before, it’s not possible to compare player’s performance in national team or for their club. If that’s so than the likes of Kane, Morata, Mbappe, Leao are all average considering their performance in Euro.

And player’s I’ve stated are not yet senior NT players but all talented in their early 20’s with high potential and already part of first team in their respective clubs.

          1. It’s not even a core of domestic players, it’s more a core of players, and for most well run clubs with a long term strategy, that core will likely be mostly domestic players who grew up in the youth teams or who know the league.

As for these completely arbitrary ratings of who is ‘hot’ or who is ‘not’, it’s all just Class A Subjective BS.

It simply doesn’t work like that.

There are countless examples of players who perform better under a different manager, different team, at club level or national level.

There are countless of players who have won numerous titles that never got near the national team.

Many of the ‘great’ Milan players never had much of an impact on the national team or even played.

Italy went to the World Cup in 1994 and left behind Rossi and Panucci even though they were starters in a back four that had conceded 15 league goals and won the Champions League.

Panucci started ahead of Tassotti but Sacchi chose the latter.

That’s why it doesn’t surprise or worry me that Di Lorenzo (who captained Napoli to 10th last season) was chosen ahead of Calabria (who captained Milan to 2nd). And Di Lorenzo had a shocking tournament and reinforced how good Calabria is.

The thing about people on here is most of them don’t even seem to like football. They like the transfer market. This is their favourite time of the year and when it’s over they spend the whole season moaning and speculating about the next transfer window.

In contrast I spend the whole transfer window moaning and then spend the season defending the players I didn’t want signed in the first place.

      2. In my opinion casadei are even better than lazar ( ACM target) . Kayode still better than emerson( ACM target) . Prati are better than RLC / adili / pobega . But sad this team only target international player , even the coach and staff not italian anymore

    2. It’s crazy to see someone called themself “a Milan fans” but they disregard Italian history that put this club as one of the best in the world.

  6. I hope Strasbourg sign calabria we try to sign royal but we don’t because they are asking for to much money and we’re cheap so it doesn’t happen and then we sign Tiago santos who is much better than both of them

  7. So the bottom line is that Calabria is the second choice for a club like Strasbourg and then you want to tell me that this guy deserves being the captain of AC Milan.

  8. It’s funny when people keep talking about Italian. In Premiership you don’t need to have English captain. Also in Spain and France. Football is Cross Cultural thing.
If you support A.C Milan because is an Italian team, you better start supporting Torino now

      1. No one called you a fake fan but it’s evident you’re from the recent bunch of fans coming in. And weren’t you the one calling us who would like more Italians on the team, fake fans?

  9. Du*bass management wants to get rid the captain, Maldini, Pobega, and Florenzi. Are they forgot CL requirement to include minimum of homebase players?

    Fkin hell.

  10. Has any other top side ever voluntarily forced out the club captain?

I mean I know Calabria is not at the same level as say Jordan Henderson, and that Henderson and Liverpool decided to part ways after 12 years so that Henderson could show his support for the community lgbtqia+ by moving to Saudi Arabia, but it’s hard to think of many others?

  11. It seems like the Purge of Scudetto Winners is continuing at Milan this summer.

Rumour has it that the homes of each of the players are being raided and if any players are found to have Scudetto medals they are being rounded up and put on the transfer market immediately.

    1. *Trigger alert*

It’s hard for Gerry the narcissist to stand in the shadow of Maldini and is really doing all to erase the achievements of the previous management.

After sacking the symbol of Milan and selling fan favourite, he tried to buy fan’s appreciation with unecessary spending and buying 11 players last summer. It didn’t really go his way. And now he needs to be careful with the likes of Leao, Theo and Mike. They too are previous management signings and fan favourites so he cannot sell them just like that. But he can make it look like they are the bad guys with their exaggerated demands and will then have no other option but to sell.
