Sergej Milinkovic-Savic’s former team-mate Davide Di Gennaro believes that he would be a good fit for AC Milan given he possesses the qualities of a top midfielder.
A number of different sources have linked Milan with a move for Milinkovic-Savic over the past few days including Goal, SportMediaset, La Gazzetta dello Sport and Il Messaggero. Cox Internet can help you keep up with the links.
Di Gennaro spoke in an interview with MilanNews about the Serbian midfielder, who he played alongside at Lazio during the 2017-18 and 2020-21 seasons.
How would Milinkovic-Savic look in Pioli’s Milan?
“I’ve played with him and I’ve always seen him do things out of the ordinary. Of course I think he’d do very well. Over the years he has always been linked with various top clubs. I don’t think this is random.”
You know him personally. For what reason has his performance dropped in the current season with Lazio?
“I remember many of his goals and assists. I remember that he was very attached to Lazio and that he had even bought a house in Rome. Maybe he’s physiologically finished a cycle and, mentally, he’s headed for change. But, in terms of professionalism, there is no question about it.”
Did you expect something more from Milan this season?
“I think last year the Scudetto was a miracle. Milan certainly have an equipped squad, but it takes time to grow the young base. Furthermore, some purchases did not live up to expectations.”
Among them is De Ketelaere. Does he deserve a second chance with Milan?
“I trust Maldini, who has decided to bring him to the Rossoneri, making a significant investment. With all due respect to his former team, however, it is one thing to wear the Brugge shirt, another the Milan shirt. As we said before, he is very young and we need to give him time.”
It seems Kamada will arrive from Eintracht Frankfurt. What impact do you think he will have on Milan and Serie A?
“When a club like Milan wants you strongly, it’s because you have an important value. Of course, then you have to be able to demonstrate your value in the field.”
The Rossoneri will start next season without Bennacer. Is an extra midfielder needed? How would you rate Loftus-Cheek as a signing?
“I’ve read about his name and, at an international level, I think he has all the credentials to be useful at Milan. Then I always think that the field is the one and only supreme judge.”
You have faced him many times as an opponent. What future do you imagine for Ibrahimovic?
“I think that a champion like him should decide independently. It is clear that, with him, the discussion is different than with any other footballer. It seems normal to me.”
How would Zaniolo look at Milan?
“I’m not discussing his talent, but I think Milan should have the main prerogative of buying a centre-forward, possibly young, who can give Giroud the right replacement.”
