AC Milan were dumped out of the Champions League at the play-off stage last night as they drew with Feyenoord, and the inquest from the Italian media has begun.
Milan could not have started the game better than they did, with Santiago Gimenez on hand to level the tie with a finish from close range after Malick Thiaw’s header back across goal, netting against his former club.
Then, disaster struck in the second half when Theo Hernandez was shown red for two very silly yellow cards. That gave Feyenoord belief, with Julian Carranza coming off the bench to equalise on the night and send the Dutch side through.
Today’s front pages
Rather unsurprisingly, the Italian media have focused on the red card and the impact that had on the game for Milan, one they otherwise stood a good chance of winning.
La Gazzetta dello Sport: “Theo madness. Milan disaster. They take the lead with Gimenez against Feyenoord, but Hernandez ruins everything. Sent off, the club are fed up. Conceiçao: ‘If I make mistakes, I’ll pack my suitcases’.”
Corriere dello Sport: “To hell. Milan disaster, goodbye Champions League. Feyenoord, fourth in the Netherlands, sent Conceiçao at home (1-1). Gimenez, who scored after 36 seconds, not enough. Theo sent off on 51 minutes. Carranza equaliser. Ibrahimovic: ‘We killed ourselves’.”
Tuttosport: “Theo, what did you do? Milan down to 10 men, goodbye Europe. Two yellow cards to Theo, the second one for diving, boosts the Dutch side who equalise. San Siro boos. Ibra: ‘We killed ourselves’.”
QS: “Milan expelled from Europe. Champions League: Theo red, Feyenoord eliminate the Diavolo.”
Milan are what Tottenham were last season….we may need to brace ourselves for next year just saying
Been bracing myself every year 😅
It is not so big disaster. 3 coaches, many transfers many mistakes. Last year – group exit.
This year KO stages. Still success.
Serie A is disaster. Here if they continue without wins – it is goodbye season.
Milan got knocked out by a side who had around 10 injuries and had their coach fired last week and wait ,,,also sold their top striker to Milan and you think it’s not a disaster???
It is not disaster. Could be even worst after defeats against Liverpool and Leverkusen.
It was not easy win against Girona, not even Slovan, so it could be much much worse.
Somehow in Ucl they managed at least KO stages.
Yes, he even wrote why. Why are you asking the same question, are you special? It is an improvement on last season, not a disaster. If Milan was doing good in CL usually it would be a disaster, but it is 2nd best result in last 10 years, right?
Its not, not qualifying for cl is 50-75m disaster. Before sales that is what we have to spend to players at maximum. Without cl we wont be able to afford making the mistakes we made last summer.
Yeah bro considering how poor this team has performed since this management took over (I kindly remind the Scudetto and the UCL semi-finals the years prior), this season is a success. Can’t wait for the parade Corso Sempione with the SuperCoppa. This club is my favorite sitcom these days. All hail Jerry.
A cowardly attempt a revisionist history. We were playing with 39 year old Ibrahimovic and 34 year old Giroud in attack. In the scudetto winning season, the team finished bottom of their UCL group. Kessie left after the scudetto, under Elliot, not under RedBird. The next season, we got to the UCL semi-finals with a total of 5 wins, 1-0 over Tottenham in the last 16, 2-1 over Napoli in the QFs. This was a team playing to its limit. Everyone knows that team overachieved and it was not sustainable given the make-up of the squad. It wouldn’t have any difference whatsoever if Elliot were still in charge, the team needed an overhaul.
Are you just not good at math and comprehension? Tell who wouldn’t take a 1-0 or 2-1 aggregate win over two legs in the UCL??? Heck, I’d be happy if we got 2-1 over Feyenoord, no?
What does revisionist history have to do with Giroud and Ibra as strikers. Bart posted about performance. Since the Scudetto (1st) and UCL semi, we’ve regressed to now 7/8th and knocked out of first round. What’s so hard to understand about cold facts?
Just sell Theo this summer, and bring back Joao Felix to Chelsea too.
Buy 1-2 good midfield players this summer.
And for this rest season, just plays humble, like a small team, play collective, and not hanging on Leao, Felix or Theo again. Play as a team, and secure the top 4 positions.
You are an Atalanta fan, you just don’t know it. Secure the top 4 is their dream, Milan fans dream of titles.
Play batesaghi instead of that lunatic, just check his partner two idiots
Bartesaghi let his man on the goal.
But Theo left the team with 10 players. I would prefer that goal and having 11 players. The possibilities of winning woud have been higher
It’s not fair. Theo only want to win. @zlatan comments : you and all director that killed Milan as a team. You dumped players with Milan blood. Tonali, Calabria,Colombo, Pobega, Maldini family. Go to he*ll you and your capitalist director.
This isn’t North Korea or Cuba, Italy is a capitalist country, this club was built by Capitalists like Berlusconi so take your communist rhetoric back to China.
Or go support Livorno or Modena with the rest of them.
Don’t support our club with your rhetoric, not welcome here, F off
This isn’t a left wing club, you clearly don’t know our history.
Yeah one century ago. I don’t see a lot of millionaires in Terzo Blu these days. But Jerry will make them come back with cheerleaders and halftime shows. Calcio is just surrounding noise during business.
Milan should beat a team like this with 9 players.
