Furlani says Milan might not hire a sporting director after all: “It is an if”

Giorgio Furlani was interviewed by the media ahead of AC Milan’s game against Bologna last night. When asked about the sporting director pursuit, he made it clear that they might not hire one after all.

Milan have been heavily linked with various sporting directors in the last few months, but no name has ever taken off properly. In his interview with Sky last night, the CEO Furlani stated that they won’t make a decision before the end of the season, while it’s not urgent either.

Speaking to DAZN shortly after, as transcribed by MilanNews, Furlani went one step further by making it clear that they are evaluating whether to hire one or not. In other words, as things stand, they haven’t even decided to fully proceed with the idea.

Is a sporting director coming?

“I said in the past that we are evaluating ‘whether’ or not to take sign a sporting director, and if we take one, it must be someone who adds value and helps us do better as well as grow. That certainly isn’t the focus now. The focus is on finishing the season well.”

Have you identified a name? Do you have clear ideas?

“I keep saying it is an if, if we hire one, so I don’t want to talk about names or identikits.”

It’s certainly rather remarkable to hear Furlani say that the sporting director role isn’t urgent, considering how important it is for a football club. Furthermore, planning for next season should have started yesterday, and that is difficult to do without a sporting director.

    1. Amazing. It was the best period of Milan in the past 10 years. Redbird did nothing good for Milan. Just messed up what was built for years with Elliot.

      1. And it is evident why. Elliot had football professionals leading the club. Gazidis was in charge of finance part, Maldini and Massara sporting part.

Redbird and Cardinale has people that listen to him. A guy that doesn’t know all the football rules. And Furlani who also doesn’t know all the rules. And Ibra that outside the football field probably can’t tie his own shoes, but he is suddenly picking managers. Set for failure.

        1. Furlani is an employe of Elliot. !!!
          Gazidis was terrible. !!!
          Otherwise, you are right.
RedBird must get replaced. And not by an american.
This is a circus. Even Zlatan is really bad.

    1. Marotta is competent while those at Milan not so much. Don’t you dare make that comparison.
Those at AC Milan wouldn’t recognize talent when they see one.

  1. If they can’t get someone excellent, would you rather they bring in someone mediocre? I’m not hearing any names besides Tare and D’Amico. If they can’t get either who else is available?

  2. Circus…..

After fling to New York to sideline Gerry and Ibra, he was the man in charge to turn this club around. We’re into May and still no sight of a SD.

Maybe those Big Boy pants are still a little too big for him.

  3. In the end it will be “we are ok as we are”. I really want Elliot to take control again. Enough is enough.

  4. Praying for the Saudi’s to buy this club for real. We have a management that is content with 9th place and Europa league. They are happy being a mid table team, this type of energy should not be at a great club with such a rich history as AC Milan. The milanisti deserve better. God hear our prayers.

    1. They win 4 games in a row and now we don’t need a sporting director anymore. This is all you need to know about this management and their ambitions.

  5. This furlani guy is just one big sick joke. So if milan does not need a sporting director, why the hell did he and cardinale meet paratici? Why did he meet tare? Why is he chasing d’amico?

The more i read about this toad the more i dislike him.

IT IS OBVIOUS HE WANTS TO RETAIN CONTROL AT MILAN.

  6. Mr Furlani will fail again what dud!
Milan is doomed again next season as these directors call the shots.
Inter will win the Scudetto again and maybe next season as well but for Furlani and Co it is not a problem if Milan finish far behind.
    Sack these pretenders!
