Furlani explains why Milan tend to spend €20m or less on new signings

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan CEO Giorgio Furlani has responded to a question on why the club seem to pursue signings that have a certain ceiling in terms of transfer fee.

Milan once again operated in a ‘sweet spot’ this summer in terms of the money spent per player, something that we have written at length about before and that continues on from the Elliott Management era. They aimed to push a line of sustainability with targeted investments.

It yielded the core that was in place for the Scudetto-winning campaign, with players like Mike Maignan, Fikayo Tomori (he was a bit more), Theo Hernandez, Ismael Bennacer, Tonali and Rafael Leao all falling into that same category of costing €15-25m.

This summer, it was the turn of Alvaro Morata, Strahinja Pavlovic, Emerson Royal and Youssouf Fofana to join from fees ranging between €13m (for the Spanish striker) and around €20m (for the Serbian defender).

Furlani spoke alongside Tammy Abraham at his first press conference yesterday and a journalist asked him: “What the fans often don’t understand is why your policy is to sign players for €20m as opposed to going all-in for more of a match winner, at least on paper.”

The CEO responded: “I often say that in football people focus a great deal on price as opposed to value. Price does not necessarily equate to value.

“We believe that we have signed some good players that play our brand of football and will contribute to success for Milan, so the price tag is irrelevant in many ways.”

  1. so if our delusional prices matches theirs or we tire them out then we sign them….

I wonder what they will say next year with all this money…
If we get rid of RLC and Emerson for combined 30M, Tammy is dry loan so no bother with finding someone to buy him, 40M incoming from 3 loans plus Brescianini… that’s total of 70M!

At least Cherki (RLC upgrade, Reijnders sub), Diallo (if Chukwueze fails this season), Gasiorowski (if we sell Thiaw) and J.David (if 20 different EPL teams don’t offer his agent 20M) are free agents next year and Ricci in his final year…

    1. Shezzus….

He gave a class act response… what else is he suppose to say, without at the same trashing your team and their transfers….

The analisys as you put it is cold, but it would WRONG for him to oubkicly comment in that manner and not at the same time offending your own guys…

      1. The truth maybe you think.
Delusional is what this man is or plain dumb?
The successful clubs who won trophies last season di not subscribe to this poo scheme. They spent to secure not good players but excellent players that sunk Milan last season will again and Furlani, Mr CEO will have egg on his face once again this season more than once. He will go down as one of the worst CEO of Milan!

  2. The truth is he is right, the most important thing is scouting the players early, and buying them, sending them out on loan, or sending to the Futuro to build them, player fees are very exuberant now.

    1. but cheapening out on 3-4 players to finish the main squad is the weird part…

Zirkzee > Abraham, any RB with 2 legs > Emerson, RLC is somehow still in the squad, no cover for Benancer…

3 upgrades and 1 addition in midfield allows you to only spend on the players that will replace outgoing ones or the ones that retire… you have amazing Futuro but if the main team crumbles it doesn’t make sense

    2. Which one did he bring that is good? From what I see not a single player mentioned is from the Redbird era. Literally Furlani wasn’t there. Since that they scouted and brought in a bunch of players, only Pulisic was worth it. The rest is average players, some overpaid, some shouldn’t have been signed for free. He can be right but you have to actually buy the good players that are cheap and there is another 50 clubs competing for them and Milan doesn’t give high wages. It is not realistic. If they spent 80M on 1-2 players this season the team would be much better, but they bought a bunch of deadwood, again. Like last season. Spent money on 1 good player and average or bad player, it is not well spent.

      1. Fofana, Pavlovic and Morata aren’t deadwood, but Emerson and Tammy purchases is where we needed actual cash… keeping RLC was a mistake…

3 upgrades (ST, RB, CAM) to these clowns would then give you results… Pavlovic was defending like crazy in his 2 games and Morata scored on his first try… Fofana needs Bennacer and Reijnders not RLC next to him…

        1. Fofana I agree as we see him with national team etc.,
But Morata is old and already didn’t score any goals in euro. I’m not optimistic about his signing. He is not Giroud or Zlatan to play long term. He didn’t even played 90mins any match in euro. He was bullied by young defenders easily in physical.
Pavlovic he is good physically and fast. But I can’t say at the moment he is best signing or not as he is good 1vs1 but infront of goals he wasn’t able to use his physicality

    3. Here we are not speaking about futuro or players after 2years who can play in first team.

Mercato for first team is for the players who can complete the team right from the beginning and we finish the season well.
If we buy young players they will take couple of years to settle otherwise we will not get any good experience player for 20million.

  3. Players of value that play our brand of football…and which brand is that. The last time we looked half decent was during that spirited effort to win our last scudetto. Other than that we have not seen a team come close to a type and style that you can associate a player with in recent mercatos. Looks more like panic buys with no DNA in mind.

  4. What a cretin…he understands value so much that we are now paying a combined 12m for two average coaches, when you could get an elite coach like Tuchel for that..yeah…what a financial whizz he is..

Value doesn’t win trophies or football matches douche…quality does….unless of course you don’t want that and all you care about is running a business…..

  5. The real reason is to avoid facing the same fate as Maldini after breaking the Cardinale bank and pay the humongous asking price of 35 million for CDK.

All the rest in this article is bull junk that Emerson Royal transfer by itself can be negate

    1. Sad part of that is 35M is not a lot of money for a player nowadays and cdk just needed time..ofc the scouting was absolute horseshît on him, cdk did not fit what pioli wanted/needed

  6. you have to be joking right emerson is useless in every aspect. this transfer for me gets a 5/10 it wasnt a great transfer but not a horrible one.
morata is a good leader and has some pace and better dribbler than giroud so i take it
pavlovic is a good cb lacking sprint speed but a good signing overall
fofana hasnt really watched him he isnt a real dm but i think he will do decent and overall a good signing
emerson i think we all know the answer not a good player overall so this is horrible signing
tammy idk what to really say he might have a good season or a bad season
    fonseca absolute fraud
so overall emerson kinda made it go down it wasnt the transfer window we all hoped fraudulento but if calabria starts and we get a new manager (a good one) we will do pretty good

  7. It is because you don’t really know what you are doing. Not Furlani not Ibra. That is why you are signing trash players for 15-25M. There is no value in buying trash that can’t play football for 15M. And we had those last season and now again, new influx of deadwood. Amazing.

  8. yep zlatan is mine favorite player and a legend of this club but sorry he and hes friends really just cant handle a big football club like milan

  9. I don’t think anybody buys this B.S

NOBODY cares what they cost, FANS care about how good they are and if they fit in!!!

“Our brand of football” what brand? What formation did you have in mind please, we all want to know?

Hojbjerg cost about 13m, I think fans would have been very satisfied with him. What you want is to speculate, so you have something to sell on.

All we needed was a DM and a striker, instead you bought 5 or 6 ordinary players.
Pavlovic looks to have ability but my God he also has no positional awareness, he has gone from Austria to Italy, it takes time. He should be a bench player for 6 months

Atalanta know how to buy players at that 20m sweet spot. They bought Bellanova not that wrech Emerson (did anybody even scout him?)

Then they did buy Chucky for 30m who barely passes as a professional footballer, he cannot use his right foot, any blind fool who watched him for 10 mins could see that!

    1. You absolutely right. They bought Chucky just cause of one good game he had against Real Madrid. He can’t make a simple pass and his finishes lack power. He is a bench warmer for the Nigerian national team. They paid over 30 million for him. He’s not worth it. And Emerson, who was Incompetent at Tottenham, they also bought him at too high a price of 15 million. They could have bought a quality player for 45 million with that money. They’re never going to make a profit from selling Emerson or Chucky. They were a waste of money.

  10. Lol, what a cop out of an answer. Can’t say I blame him tbh. Any answer closer to the truth would cause way more chaos than there already is.

  11. Considering these clowns are speculators they’ve done an awful job in these two summers because no player they’ve bought has increased his value through their performances. Maybe Reijnders a bit and Pulisic. But the value of the rest of their acquisitions has plunged – Chuk, Musah, Emerson, RLC. That’s roughly an 80 million investment losing its value.

  12. There was a lot of good players with high potential upside for 20-25M. Doubt they even came across a desk at Milan..
Our scouting and acquisition really took a dive when gazidis left.

  13. When Milan starts winning, these critics will just change their nickname and write affirmatively. Of course, everyone except the hidden Inter fans

  14. Rather than signing 3 players for 20m each sign 1 player for 60m.

    We finished 2nd last season.

We finished 2nd despite not having a DM.

We needed a DM and Morata and that was it.

    1. A €60 million player is going to be around €8 million in wages. Chelsea can send players on loan and pay half their salaries, we can’t.

      1. And how about we pay 8M€ in wages ?
We can’t aim for big titles while having a cap at 5M€, sooner or later we’ll have to pay for quality.
shinter renewerd to Barella and Lautaro for 9M€ each.

        1. Exactly, find a top DM, Ugarte for example, pinpoint him and get him….

There’s this myth of why we buy cheap and pay cheap salaries which Furlani has tried to sell to us like snake oil, but the bottom line is, this is moneyball..desperately trying to find a talent at a cheap price..

Redbirds main problem is it he BS doesn’t wash anymore and they’re just getting more and more tangle in their own BS…

      2. Sure but 1 player for 8M or 3 players for 3M each.. HA.
We’re cheapskateling tiptoeing around but the fact is, when we buy we need to buy quality and pay a but more to get it.
Now I’m not saying go on a spending spree, but if we ,4 example, get an opening to get a Olmo lvl player for 50-60M, shouldn’t we take?
Better than buying 3 20M, maybe they make it, players..
        Idk

        1. Yes indeed.

Our plan should be to purchase 2 high class players each summer.
1 ready made and 1 talented youngster.

For example – Hojbjerg 13m and Sesko 60m

  15. Ohh so we should sell Leao, Theo, Mike, tomori around 20m.

It’s clear they don’t want to win anything just buy young players and sell them to big clubs, only for business no scudetto or aiming for champions league.

End of the good era not going to win anything until these owners in place.

  16. All he had to say is these are the amounts the top Italian clubs pay and higher fees means higher salaries, which isn’t sustainable.

  17. The value of the players isn’t the issue here, it’s signing guys like Musah, Chuk and Emerson, who’ve had mediocre careers, and not buying Italian.

  18. Well well well – the little boy genius finally admitted what many (including myself) have been saying since these Redbird donkeys took over our club: we will not spend big on ANY player. 20M approx and that is it

So maybe now we will stop hearing those delusional Redbird Lovers talk about us getting players like Buongiornio and Gorkyes, etc….LOLOLOLO

Will are never going anywhere with a bargain strategy like this. I’m all for getting good deal – but you get what you pay for and if this is the only approach we use – we are done – esp when players like Theo Leao and Mike are eventually sold.

So TY Redbird for proving and confirming my point: PROFIT over TITLES – that is the Redbird way

    Good times

  19. Furnali is a big clown who sold Tonali and replaced him with a joke like Musah, RLC, and Fofana.

Then he sent Kalulu away to Juve and replaced with another joke, Emerson Royal, who’s not even worth 20 million.

The moment clown like Cardinale and Furlani took control is the moment Milan enter Banter era 2.0.

    1. But that IS the moneyball nonsense. If you lose a top player, try and replace him with multiple players and make up his ability over the aggregate. Might work in baseball…doesn’t work in football..

  20. You still need to invest on top players when the opportunity comes and retain your best ones. Looking at bottom bargains and turning down top players to be cheap isn’t a good strategy when it is done with bo exception.

  21. It also means they were never really going to pay 40 millions for Zirkzee. Still, folks believed this but rejected Fonseca as just a wild rumour. And here we are today.
