CM: Centre-back could leave Milan this summer due to lack of playing time

By Oliver Fisher -

This summer will see several players leave Milan who are no longer deemed essential for the project and Matteo Gabbia could be one of them, a report claims.

According to what is being reported by Calciomercato.com, the future of Gabbia remains to be seen. The Primavera graduate is not getting much playing time at the moment and seems to be firmly the last choice in the centre-back pecking order.

At the moment it seems as though Fikayo Tomori, Pierre Kalulu (when healthy), Simon Kjaer and Malick Thiaw are above the Italian in the hierarchy, but he could find more minutes given the injury to Kalulu and he might just use that chance to impress.

Gabbia has often been linked with a loan move away from the club given that he has never really been an established starter, and while the report does not mention whether a departure would be a loan or a sale, it would leave a gap in the UEFA squad list given he is an academy-trained player.

  1. I think they’d be making a mistake getting rid of Gabbia. Wish they’d show a bit more faith in the Primavera graduates.

  2. Good for Gabbia. He’s been treated like trash here and besides a few off games (which all of our defenders have had) he’s been incredibly solid. Should have been starting more this season consistently to see if he could grow into a starting caliber player but Pioli stuck with our current crew who have been doing oh so well….

  3. Not good enough. If Gabbia was any good Kalulu and Thiaw would not get a starting spot over him. Milan should sold Gabbia and kept Romagnoli. Another dumb decision by Milan management.

  4. It indicates how Pioli Detroyed the team while Linning up S Kjear and Benching M Gabbia.
Linning up Krunic by Benching T Pobega
    And so on

  5. Gabbia is average at best. Only reason to keep him is for the Italian player quota. Had his opportunity to beat out Kalulu, Thiaw and Tomori and he couldn’t. Says it all right there

    1. Nah he hasn’t had any opportunity. Pioli only knows how to play high press and wants faster defenders. Unfortunately those faster defenders also seem to have worse positioning and are crap in the air (not including Thiaw or Kjaer as they’re good in the air). It’s all relative and 100% down to playstyle. Romagnoli was great until Pioli, now he’s gone and great once again. Go figure…

      1. If we are all in on Pioli for the long haul then I guess it’s right to get rid of Gabbia and bring in more defenders like Kalulu and Tomori. Good in their own right but have their very obvious flaws which have been exposed this season. If we’re not sticking with Piolo then I definitely wouldn’t sell Gabbia.
