Matteo Gabbia has insisted that the AC Milan squad are working hard on defensive dynamics, praising Massimiliano Allegri.

Gabbia has been put quite literally at the centre of Allegri’s defensive rebuild, given that he is playing in the middle of a three-man defence. The Italian seems to finally have a starting spot guaranteed after years of battling for a place and even going out on loan.
Although the Rossoneri allowed two goals against Cremonese, the fact they bounced back with a clean sheet against Lecce was positive. Not only that, but the stats show that Milan are the team that have conceded the least shots of any in Serie A thus far, as well as the lowest Expected Goals (xG).
Speaking at the 2024-25 Gentleman Fair Play Awards at the Teuliè Military School in Milan, Gabbia was asked about Allegri’s impact how the team defend and the changes that the club made. MilanNews relayed his comments.
How are the team at the moment?
“We’re feeling good and we’re really hungry to play and get points. We did well not to be filled with negativity after the loss against Cremonese. From there, we put the game behind us and worked hard to then win in Lecce.”
The team has been almost totally revolutionised…
“The club has made its choices, and it’s right that the changes are acknowledged. The club has given us a boost with the new players, because there’s a new atmosphere at Milanello, with so many good and eager young players.
“I also feel like thanking the guys who have left. Despite last year’s disappointing season, the blame lies with the entire team, so I bid them farewell and give them a big hug.”
Have you been doing more work on the defensive phase?
“We’re working hard: on defence, on the team structure. The coach is explaining to us how important it is for everyone to work together, not as a single unit. There’s no point in talking now; we’ll let the pitch do the talking; that’s what matters.”
Seasonal goal?
“I wouldn’t talk about objectives, Champions League or anything else. We have to try to win all the matches, then in March at the decisive moment of the season we will understand what we are still fighting for and what we can all aspire to together.”
What has Nkunku looked like so far?
“Honestly, I’m not the one who decides on his role. The club did well to sign a player like him. We’ll enjoy him on the pitch and his play, but I’m really happy and impressed with his attitude so far.”
Inter are a tough opponent…
“It’s always difficult to play against them. They’ve reached two Champions League finals in two years, so their results speak for themselves. Last year we were better, but every game is still worth three points for us.”
Do you miss the Curva Sud?
“Our job is to play. Of course, we’re disappointed not to see the Curva at San Siro because they’ve carried us along and helped us win many games in recent years. Honestly, I’m not the one who should comment on the vicissitudes surrounding this situation.”
