It has been announced that Matteo Gabbia has undergone surgery to resolve a hernia over in London, England.

It was known that Gabbia was a doubt for the derby against Inter on Sunday. The centre-back was pulled from the starting line-up just before kick-off against Parma last Sunday with muscle discomfort, with Koni De Winter taking his place.

It was even reported earlier today that Gabbia had continued training separately from the rest of the team as he was still evidently feeling some discomfort. Now, however, a rather surprising twist has emerged.

As MilanNews, Daniele Longo and others are reporting, Gabbia had a consultation with Professors Ernest Schilders and Rowena Johnson today at the Mayo Clinic Healthcare in London. The decision was made to undergo surgery to resolve an inguinal hernia.

The operation, performed by Schilders himself in the presence of Dr. Mazzoni, was a complete success. Gabbia is doing well and will return to Italy tomorrow to begin physiotherapy. It is also stated that his recovery time will be approximately a month.

Looking at the fixture list, Gabbia is therefore set to miss at least three games. There is the derby against Inter on Sunday 8 March, then Lazio away on 15 March, Torino at home on 21 March and Napoli away on April 4. He could return in Naples, or Udinese at home on 12 April may be targeted.

  1. Get well soon. Although now he’s in danger of losing his spot to De Winter, because he has really been performing well with Gabbia absence

  2. That’s a blow. He is the lynchpin of the defence.
No back up defenders now if we get a suspension or injury.
It’s a very reckless situation by management

  3. At least there is a week between each of the next 3 games, then its a 2 week break for international football, so he should just miss 3 games and be back for Napoli away on april 4th.

The other 3 CBs should be able to play once a week for the next three. Lets hope they stay out of suspensions.
