Gallery: ‘Milan for the encore’, ‘Big names waiting’ – Today’s front pages of Italian papers

By Isak Möller -

AC Milan are slowly shifting focus from the Scudetto celebrations to the upcoming season, hoping to replicate the amazing work we saw this past campaign. And for that to happen, they need a few signings.

Paolo Maldini and Ricky Massara are working hard on the matter but there is one thing that has slowed them down: their expiring contracts. The renewals are yet to be signed and that has slowed down the mercato a bit.

This was the main focus of Tuttosport on the front page this morning: “Maldini, the yellow for the renewal slows Milan down. Still pending the signatures of the two directors”. QS had a similar angle: “Stop Milan, big names waiting. Maldini and Massara still without renewal. Market stopped”.

Gazzetta Dello Sport focused on Milan’s wish to replicate the Scudetto season and a potential formation change: “A Milan for the encore. Botman-Sanches, and Pioli prepares a new formation”.

  1. If Botman and Sanches are added and someone like De Ketelaere is a target, then a switch to a 3-5-2 would make a lot of sense IMO.

Would give Hernandez more freedom to do what he does best and four players for the front two would be Leao, Giroud, Origi and CDK/Rebic, with Rebic being able to cover LWB.

Salamaekers would back up Calabria on the right, which is ideal for his hardworking skill set and the midfield three would be made from choices of Tonali, Bennacer, Sanches, Pobega and Adli who probably suit that quite and spread Kessie’s responsibilities between multiple players.

Could easily switch to a 4-3-3 from that for some flexibility too.
