Gallery: ‘Rangnick brings Glasner’, ‘Three-way race’ – Today’s front pages in Italy

Things are seemingly heating up on the head coach front for AC Milan, with the list narrowed down to just a few candidates as per the papers this morning.

As you would expect with Italian media, many names have been mentioned since the defeat against Cagliari. However, with Milan now seriously exploring the idea of hiring Ralf Rangnick as a director, it has become a tad easier to identify potential managers.

One name that could gather a lot of steam in the next week or so is Oliver Glasner, who has left Crystal Palace and is looking around for a new adventure. Having worked with Rangnick in the past, the two could be a good match to lead the new Milan.

Today’s papers are still contradicting each other, though, with Gazzetta pushing Glasner and Tuttosport pushing Mauricio Pochettino.

  1. If we analyze the Italian media according to the historical backgrounds and interests of each of the three major newspapers featured in the morning headlines, we discover that the Italian press does not report the news impartially. Instead, it cleverly leans towards and pushes for options that serve its preferred agenda and narrative.
The Italian press is currently divided into two camps, each serving a specific interest:
    1. Gazzetta dello Sport (leaning towards the Rangnick-Glassner duo): The newspaper tries to adopt a “realistic” option that would be easy for Milan management to implement, so that it later appears to be “informed about the inner workings of the decision-making process.”
    2. Tuttosport (unwaveringly leaning towards Mauricio Pochettino): The indirect footballing sabotage by pushing Milan towards Pochettino is pushing him towards a “financially suicidal option.”
    3. Corriere dello Sport (standing in the middle and criticizing reality): The Rome-based press always tends to portray the northern clubs (Milan, Inter, Juventus) as floundering. The Italian press wants and favors Oliver Glasner (and the Rangnick project) as a rational option for managing the club, because it represents a radical and exciting change to the daily tactical analysis.
