Galliani reveals reaction to Daniel Maldini’s Monza goal – Paolo Maldini phone call

By Euan Burns -

Monza CEO Adriano Galliani has explained how he reacted to Daniel Maldini scoring his first goal for the Brianzoli, which resulted in a phone call to Paolo Maldini.

Speaking whilst at the Lege Serie A Assembly (via Calciomercato.com), Galliani answered a number of questions about Monza and the season they are having under Raffaele Palladino.

Maldini is currently on loan at Monza, having been recalled from his loan at Empoli where he failed to make any real impact. He scored the opening goal in their 2-0 win against Salernitana last weekend.

Galliani was understandably chuffed with the goal given it was the 78th minute and Salernitana sit at the bottom of the table.

His first port of call was to ring Paolo and talk about how thrilled he was to finally have a Maldini who scores goals.

“For me it’s very romantic that the two goals in Salerno were scored by two youngsters, one born in Milan and the other in Monza [Matteo Pessina], one who grew up in Milan’s youth sector and one in Monza, for me it’s the best,” Galliani said.

“I made the first phone call to Paolo and told him. Finally a Maldini who scores goals instead of the defender I had before,” he added.

Maldini is now 22 years old and does not seem as though he has a long-term future with Milan, but he could earn a permanent move to Monza if he continues to impress after this goal.

He has one goal and an assist for Palladino’s side in 10 games so there is work to do, but the way he took that goal was a reminder of his talent.
