GdS: Possibly a mistake – Abate flies whilst Bonera struggles at Milan

AC Milan took the next step to improve their youth system in the summer with the implementation of a Futuro squad in Serie C. However, it has not been an easy step to take so far, with the Rossoneri struggling, leading to questions about Ignazio Abate.

Last season, Abate led the young Milan Primavera side to the final of the UEFA Youth League – a squad powered by the likes of Kevin Zeroli and Francesco Camarda. So with the Rossoneri looking to promote these players to Serie C football via the Futuro squad, it would make sense to give Abate continuity with the same players.

However, this was not the decision made by the Diavolo, instead, Daniele Bonera became the coach of the side, and things are not going as planned. At present, Bonera’s side sit 19th in the league, with only one win from 8 games.

This morning, Gazzetta dello Sport takes a look at what could’ve been. Abate left his role as Primavera coach for a first-team role, joining Ternana, and so far, he and his team are flying.  After an opening-day defeat to Pescara, his side are unbeaten in eight games with six victories in this time.

The coach offers confidence, knowledge and flexibility, managing games very well and getting the best of his players – which was a key element of his time working with the Futuro players.

It is early doors, but with Bonera struggling, was he the right man to lead the Primavera-led Futuro into Serie C? Possibly not. With the two coaches set to meet in December, we could get an answer.

  1. We all knew this is gonna happen, Bonera never had it as a coach, even when he had to take the bench for a couple of matches, Abate was a wayyy better coaching primavera side and deserved the role as head coach of Futuro, but time always put everything in it site.
Won’t expect that our directors are gonna beg for him to come back

  2. Regardless of who was coach, this team would’ve always struggled. Teens playing in a men’s league for the first time playing against guys who have been playing for years. It’s going to take time, it’ll work out in the end. The over reactions have been intense for weeks now.

    1. It’s not about teens playing in men’s league,it’s actually about continuity.the boys played well under abate but when they were going for a leap to serie_c where they need more guidance and trust, the coach was changed.that in itself will affect them a lot.if abate still coached them,am not saying they will be flying but won’t be this bad

  3. “So with the Rossoneri looking to promote these players to Serie C football via the Futuro squad, it would make sense to give Abate continuity with the same players.”

Of course it made sense, and since it made sense we did the opposite.

  4. Tbh I think Abate choose to not coach Milan Futuro in Serie C.

He got offers to coach an established team in Serie B, why choose to coach a new team in Serie C that consist of mostly u23 players?

This team will always struggle at start against adults… it’s a big leap from Primavera to Serie C. Manage your expectations.

  5. The elephant in the room is the rumor that Abate had to leave because he was not starting Ibra’s son. Whether the rumor is true or not, I don’t know, but I wouldn’t be surprised.
