GdS: ‘Abraham, the 9 for Fonseca’ – why Milan and Roma are pushing for a swap deal

AC Milan are Roma appear to be closing in on a swap deal that involves Tammy Abraham and Alexis Saelemaekers, according to a report.

According to this morning’s edition of La Gazzetta dello Sport (seen below), the deal will be Saelemaekers plus cash for Abraham, with Paulo Fonseca getting another striker as he has been pushing for since Alvaro Morata joined.

The two players quickly found an agreement with their prospective new clubs but in order for everything to be completed the details of the deal between the two clubs still need to be defined. The common will suggests that today could be the day for that.

Milan and Roma will resume discussions this morning and the distance has been reduced to a minimum. The negotiation started with a distance of around €5m as Roma asked the Rossoneri for a cash amount of €10m to make the swap happen, but now things are a little closer.

The Giallorossi should be satisfied with around €7m and it is not excluded that in order to close, a small sacrifice will also be required from the players, and specifically from Abraham, who currently earns €5.5m net per season (€7.3m gross, thanks to the growth decree).

Milan could thus save a little on his salary, also thanks to the Englishman’s absolute conviction in moving to Milan, where in addition to playing the Champions League he would reunite with friends from his Chelsea days, such as Fikayo Tomori, Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Christian Pulisic.

On Roma’s balance sheet, Abraham currently has an amortisation figure of around €17m. Basically, the capital club cannot go below that figure if they are to avoid a loss. Last year Milan valued Saelemaekers at around €12m when he was loaned to Bologna.

In essence, the starting point of the Rossoneri was born from this consideration. Roma, however, do not see only a €5m difference in the valuation of the two players and they started from a price of €22.5m for the English centre-forward, which was the same price they asked West Ham for.

That may be fine for Milan, but at that point the amount of Saelemaekers’ valuation must also be increased. By how much? The two clubs are thinking precisely about the answer to this question, but around €15m seems a sensible compromise.

Beyond accounting issues, the deal arose from squads needs. Fonseca has long been an admirer of Abraham, a No.9 capable of attacking spaces and scoring goals, when he isn’t injured. In 2021-22, Tammy scored 17 goals: more than Morata and Giroud have ever done in the Italian league.

After the rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee in June 2023, Abraham played just 13 games last season, scoring just one goal. However, it is equally true that if this were not the case, Milan would hardly have been able to carry out the operation with Roma.

  1. Tammy is broke player. Considering how we played two of our starting games, this season will be a disaster. Forget about our past glory. This management is all about money making 😖

    1. Absolutely correct.

I don’t see anything special in this player that Fonsecab is crazy about. He is not a prolific goal scorer, does not have a striker’s killer instinct, does not have the qualities to lead the attack of a great team such as AC Milan.

I am totally devastated by this crazy obsession with Tammy, when we have serious midfield/defensive problems to solve.

    2. Jonathan David is more flexible, can also play as N10 and not interfere with Camarda’s development as our main n9, in his final year and no one is signing him since Gyokeres and Ivan Toney are the targets for Arsenal and Tottenham…

We have a rapport with Lille and Moncada has to be this Ligue 1 wizz…

J.David and Kone for Saelemakers and Jovic would have been a masterpiece, but it looks more like a caricature right now…

        1. Yeah especially as one of the excuses was Chiesa is coming back from serious long term injury… yet Abraham ruptured his ACL and we’re OK signing him?

Also who cares if Fonseca likes Abraham, he also likes Emerson Royal and everyone in North London knows he’s Royally awful

    3. €190 million spent. They have spent more than they have received in transfer fees. Stop lazily repeating the bs accusations made by buffoons.

      1. 190M€ so well spent. Do you still think it’s Jerry’s money from his own pocket like he’s some philanthropist or the biggest Milan fan out there? He used OPM to buy the club and now the club’s expenses are just the budget of the club made from commercial and competition revenues and transfer fees received. This management of bankers is allergic to any minor risk. Juventus will pay Atalanta over the next four years for Koopmeiner. This is not something that this management will do as they want a clean budget every year so the club keeps its value for a potential resale. Meanwhile they can only rely on bargains and rejects. As if Morata or Fofana would be enough to close the 19 point spread with Inter. Even Atalanta and Napoli are more ambitious and they don’t have “500M fans around the world”.

        1. Hey Bart, …. you know the rest.
Bart again relaying his inside information from being in all the meetings with management and ownership.
So which is it? Are they cheap? Because they have spent a lot of money.
Are they improving the squad? I still haven’t heard a single one of these haters make the case that the squad is not stronger than it was last season. Still waiting to hear that. We added Morata, Pavlovic, Fofana, Emerson and now Abraham and we lost a 37 year old Giroud and Kjaer on his last leg and Kalulu who barely even played last season. Does anyone think they haven’t improved the team?
So they are spending money and they are strengthening the squad every year. What terrible owners.
What we need is someone to come in and spend a ton of money on overpriced big names and put the club in massive debt again. Maybe even get some fines and points deducted. That’s the way to do things.
Why would you bring up Napoli? How did they do last season? And now they have the “brilliant” Conte who is already complaining about the team he agreed to coach, and is forcing out one of the top 3 strikers in the world so he can bring in Lukaku. Thank God Milan was smart enough to avoid that guy.

      2. Well they have rebuilt the entire midfield twice in two years….an overwhelming admission that they are clueless…still yayyyyyy Redbird

        1. You understand “rebuild” VS “add-on” right?

Selling off Adli and Pobega is not a rebuild.

Adding Fofana is a position of need is not a rebuild.

Where is the rebuild??? Draw me a diagram here, please.

  2. I don’t understand Fonseca at all, how can you send players like Salesmakers, Benaccer and Adili out then bring a player like TAMMY… I don’t get it, and I am not enjoying this in any way.

If you send these players out, then you should get better replacements, so the team grows stronger. Tammy is (not) a prolific striker, Salesmakers is far more lethal than him, and why should we be looking for a striker when our major problem is in the central midfield position and defence.

    I really don’t get it.

    1. Lmaoo…’saelemaekers is far more lethal than him’. In what way? Saelemaekers has been with milan for 3-4 years and everyone knows what he can give, lots of running. Tammy is coming to be a backup to Morata and to have someone of his calibre as a backup is good. Or would you rather have Jovic lead the line again.

    2. HAha! Saleamakers a lethal player… Has everyone got amnesia? He averaged 2 goals a season when he was starting for us now everyone wants to pretend that he is some great player just so they can complain about management.

  3. Meanwhile Giuntoli nailed the market with Juventus. This is what you get when you have a truly ambitious management and invest wisely on the market. Seems like we didn’t suffer enough during the banter era…

    1. It’s possibly a reason why Motta never really considered us. I can imagine him asking for Nico Gonzalez, Koopmeiners etc and the management going well no, but have you thought about Emerson Royal

    2. my thoughts exact. got rid of entire dead-weights except for Pogba and Arthur. signed high quality players all around. Juve now has a 25 strong and exciting player squad, fitting perfectly to Motta’s playstyle…

meanwhile we get Emerson and Abraham, instead of Kayode/Bellanova and J.David… how do people not see difference between these?! and when you call out owners people jump to defend them as if they were Ibra protecting Cardinale’s pockets…

      1. maybe we should start an X campaign?! American stocks get hit pretty badly if they are actively bashed on X…

        #CardinaleOUT
        #IbraCardinalesPET

        1. Man I wouldn’t want to be Milan’s community manager right now, there’s a storm of angry fans on social media. There is still a majority of fans who don’t care about Jerry’s bank account but want to win. Right now, not in the hypothetical future.

This management is still doing good on the business side, the brand is growing, we can only hope for a resale soon with an ambitious owner. Maybe one day it will be our turn to hire the best managers and coaches on the market like Juventus did with Giuntoli and Motta. In the words of Shakespeare, “true hope is swift, and flies with swallow’s wings.”

          1. we don’t even need that much that’s the problem… literally 2 quality pieces and after going 13M for Morata, 18M for Pavlovic, and 15M for Emerson, where is all the money? we spent peanuts to get a decent Mercato and we are going for scrapes…

            J.David and Kone in… that’s like 45M
Sell Saelemakers to Roma for 15-17M, terminate Jovic

If Fonseca keep up with excuses there are Xavi and Segrio Conseicao waiting…

They debate for weeks and come up with $hittiest ideas… Zlatan is glazing for Cardinale so he keeps him in his firm, Moncada is just r@cist against any player who isn’t French… How can these clowns be in charge?

          2. I think Moncada gets a commission over transfers as it’s common these days for football executives. Considering there were rumours one year ago that he could leave Milan, I think he negotiated quite well his new contract and promotion last summer.

I disagree with you regarding the overall level of the team though, bare Mike, Théo, Leao, Tomori there is no top player. Reijnders and Pulisic are good players but they only thrive against small oppositions. Pavlovic or Fofana have to prove themselves. Morata is barely an upgrade over Giroud. Many of the guys brought by this management are just depth pieces but the coach has to start them because he has no other option. Last summer we heard about Milinkovic-Savic, he would have been an exceptional recruit to finally forget Kessié.

          3. I think I would also add Bennacer to the 4 you mentioned. Those 5 plus Reijnders and Pulisic that will have exceptional season at Milan this season, if the club doesn’t go up in flames. Pavlovic and Fofana true need to prove themselves, but I think the quality is there.

If we add Jonathan David to that rotation that leaves RB from having quality 11. And let’s face it we could have gotten Bellanova/Kayode instead of Emerson… We also have exciting and good depth with Futuros, on top, waiting for any chance.

Hence, why I think the missing 2 pieces are that important.

    3. Giuntoli has overspent really bad. Almost 60m for Koop? He is good, but not THAT good. And let’s wait until the end of the season to make judgements, not two matches…

      1. Juve has depth and quality, we have depth but idk much about quality when we have RLC, Jovic, Emerson, Teracciano… Motta would have kicked them out during day 1, while we need all the “wise” directors to agree on everything…

Take them out and substitute with quality RB, ST, CM and maybe another midfielder since we have only 5 right now.

Use loan+option/obligation, deferral, resale %… We don’t do any business in Serie A and constantly miss out on interesting prospects…

heck how did Brescianini who’s 50% we own and was our captain end up being fought over by Conte and Gasperini… 2 of the 3 best Italian coaches we have in the league… perfect bench player and would have cost us 6M.

Bellanova and Kayode were ignored for Emerson? who upgrades the role how exactly? he just uses international slot which forces us to sell Saelemakers who is a perfect Joker, plays 4-5 positions!

4-5 mediocre players really drag you down vs high quality teams

        1. we saw it as well… Jovic shooting the usual blanks, RLC can’t do anything but run towards enemy and lose the ball most of the time: 0 control, 0 technique, 0 passing, 0 vision and creativity, 0 grit… Terracciano is just confused and needs time in Serie B or A. Emerson was again, just a big mistake, when we had way more interesting prospects…

      2. Alright man thanks for your opinion which seems not to be in line with Giuntoli the architect of Napoli’s Scudetto and of this summer’s Juventus mercato which is already praised by fans and media.

I agree that it’s still the beginning of the season but it’s not looking good for Milan and for many of us here it’s hardly a surprise.

      3. For all the praise Atalanta got for their market, they too dropped points to Udine… Doom & Gloom? probably not.

Milan will be OK. Just need time.

  4. I am not being sentimental of selling Saelemaekers due to he was part of scudetto winning team. I dont have poster hanged in my room for that scudetto winning team anyway which can annoy me or such if anyone part of that team (even though less contribution) being sold. Have been supporting Milan since early 1990s so I am not supporting Milan 2021/22 only. But I just feel sad that Milan sell someone who shows pride to play for Milan (the way he celebrated his goal to Napoli 2 season ago can tell it) with decent (not top) quality and no history of being a trouble maker, but then getting swapped with someone with questionable quality and physical resilience AND high salary. I really can’t understand. But hey, it’s management and coach decision. Although I don’t like it, but it is what it is, and will keep supporting the team.

    1. You will always have an idea of those that have been supporting Milan since the Early 90’s, might be a bit disappointed with certain choices but will not drown people here with whining and negativity. How refreshing!.

  5. makes no sense, Tammy has scored 9 goals in the past 2 seasons, only 1 last season, and we are paying 7m + Saelemakers ??
We should have just kept Colombo for free, he’s scored same amount of goals in the past 2 seasons and doesn’t get injured !!!
Same with the Emerson Royal transfer, don’t understand the obsession !!!???
Could’ve got Chiesa for peanuts and kept Saelemakers ??? Baffling decisions

    1. Where? We can’t offload actual decent midtable quality players in this window – Ballo-Toure, Origi, Bennacer, Salaemakers, Pobega, Adli, Kalulu.

It’s too early to judge the new crop, but if they don’t work out I think moving them on will be very difficult.

All of those should be of interest to a team somewhere, but because of their wages or some other factor we can’t make a commercial case for any of them.

  6. What pains me most in all this transfer stuff is allowing Chiesa to go somewhere else without using d opportunity to sign him. Leao is good but so inconsistent. We need a serious backup. We should have allowed Colombo to stay and get Chiesa.

  7. Juve gets 4 players in a week, 3 of those on loan and Milan is to sign or not to sign Abraham for 2 months. Pathetic honestly. So pathetic.
They’ve absolutely no idea what the team needs and how to get it. They knew we needed a ST and got that relatively quickly after that it was meh. We’ll try and sign this and that…

  8. The idea of Tammy is ok. The reality of Tammy coming off an ACL a year ago is cringy. Objectively, 10mil for him and offloading a player we have no room for isn’t the worst move.

Even with all that, he’d likely be better starting off than either OK4 or Jovic.

    1. Agree

Although question must be asked: why are we in this mess in the first place?? Anyone who understands football knows Jovic and Okafor were not proper #9’s.

Again – managements fault and their inexperience renders us in a position that we have to GAMBLE on the health of Abraham. May work or may not we will see. Fingers crossed. But a serious club with ambition wouldn’t put themselves in this position and wouldn’t just go after a player because we can get them on the cheap
