GdS: ‘Ahead of Premier League’ – Milan’s position in race for French star

By Ben Dixon -

Among the priorities for the upcoming summer is a new midfielder, and AC Milan have their preference. Today, a report has suggested that a move could be more possible than once imagined.

The upcoming mercato is vital for several reasons, which is known by everyone inside and outside the club. Not only is it Paulo Fonseca’s first in charge of the club, but he is tasked with renovating several areas of the squad whilst re-defining some positions, perhaps.

One of the areas in focus is midfield, where there has been an evident lack of balance in the past 12 months, and whilst it was not a sole definition of the Rossoneri’s season, it played a large part. For example, Tijjani Reijnders was often played in a much deeper role than he prefers, and whilst he did not do poorly, it was clear his game was being neutralised.

Therefore, there is a need to add a player that can allow players like Reijnders to excel further up the pitch, with little, or at least less, defensive responsibility, and the player seen as the facilitator for this is Youssouf Fofana.

Milan’s interest in the Frenchman has been evident in recent months, but there have been fears about the competition for his signature, but a report from Gazzetta dello Sport (seen below) may have cleared up some worries.

As the paper writes, Fofana tops the Diavolo’s wish list, and vice versa. Premier League interest, most notably from Arsenal, is present, but playing at San Siro and in Serie A are his preferences, and he will ‘gladly discuss a three-year deal with an option to potentially extend further’.

Additionally, his current club, AS Monaco, know that he wants to take the next step in his career, and ‘an agreement’ is in place for him to depart if a suitable offer arrives, something which Milan have already got prepared, ready to send to the French club – €25 million.

  1. I don’t see him in that holding midfield position in 433 but we also don’t have a clue what formation Fonseca will play apart from media speculations. It may as well be 4231. If so, then in my opinion a double pivot pair of Fofana-RLC and Reijnders in no10 role is most logical. Who knows maybe even Rabiot-Fofana. I wouldn’t mind that. But let’s see.

      1. Adli is a great lad, I like him for his character and love for these colors. I think he would come good as a sub to either position be it in the center or behind a striker. Much more than Musah imo.
