GdS: Analysing the officiating in Cagliari vs. Milan – Maignan risked a penalty

It was another nerve-racking end to an AC Milan game last night as they won 1-0 against Cagliari, failing to kill the clash earlier. And as stated by the media today, they could have had a penalty whistled against them.

Gazzetta Dello Sport (via MilanLive) analysed the performance of the referee, Marco Di Bello, who in general let a lot of things slide. He only blew the whistle five times in the first half and that says a lot about his stance.

In the 87th minute, Milan could have had a penalty whistled against them as Matteo Lovato won the ball in a challenge with Mike Maignan. The latter came out to punch but instead hit the defender, although only a brushed touch.

Di Bello deemed it to be a ‘normal’ challenge and decided not to point to the penalty spot. VAR didn’t ask him to review the situation either as he clearly saw the situation when it happened (it was a corner). But it was indeed risky for Milan.
