GdS: Analysing the referee’s performance in Empoli vs. Milan – key events

By Isak Möller -

Gianluca Aureliano was the referee in charge of AC Milan’s 3-1 win against Empoli last night. He handed the clash well, as a report highlights, even if there have been some question marks afterwards.

Today’s edition of Gazzetta Dello Sport (via SempreMilan) analysed the performance of the referee. One of the key events happened in the 36th minute as Fode Ballo-Toure blocked a shot, which seemingly hit his arm. However, it was in a natural position (for a sliding movement) and also close to his body.

The other ‘controversy’ came in the second half just before Milan’s goal, as Sandro Tonali took the throw-in quite a bit higher than where it was supposed to be. Empoli’s manager was subsequently warned for the protests but there’s nothing VAR can do, only Aureliano could have stopped the move live.

One can understand why Empoli were frustrated, but it’s also something that happens more or less every game. Overall, Aureliano handled the game well and there were no big mistakes from him.
