GdS: Bartesaghi part of Milan’s left-back dilemma amid limited playing time

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan came into the 2023-24 season with Davide Bartesaghi as the deputy to Theo Hernandez, but he is finding playing time hard to come by and it could impact his future.

Milan did not sign a new left-back during the summer mercato as they had difficulty in offloading Fode Ballo-Toure who didn’t end up sealing his exit until the end of deadline day, so they put faith in Bartesaghi who played plenty in preseason.

La Gazzetta dello Sport (seen below) talks about how Milan are trying to sign Juan Miranda but his request of €2m net per season salary has forced them to reflect on the value of the deal, even if it would be a free transfer.

Part of those reflections will concern Bartesaghi, who is held in high regard by Stefano Pioli and the coaching staff. He doesn’t have the attacking qualities to be like Theo nor is he considered a generational talent, but he trains well and has done well when called upon.

Theo Hernandez is the kind of player who is better if he plays and doesn’t need much rest, so the search for a deputy doesn’t distress the management. They will talk about the issue between December and January, hoping that the injuries do not increase.

If Miranda were to arrive early in January for around €3m, then that might have a knock-on impact on Bartesaghi, for whom a loan could become a possibility.

  1. One more Italian homegrown academy player kicked out to BUY a foreigner. Well done. Well done, indeed.

It’s not like Inter hasn’t showed Italians on the pitch can bring success, right?

    1. Kicked out Gabbia, brought in Pellegrino. Not ready until he’s thrown in the deep end against Napoli after several injuries to the team. Then he gets injured too. Genius management.

      1. Based on what that guy showed, Pellegrino won’t be ready in 5 years. Just look at the 1st Napoli goa… Atrocious defending. Actually, you can’t even call that defending.
